Knox considers it, then nods. Jerry seems slightly green, but he steps outside.

And I… don’t follow.

Because I don’t want to know if my doorman was involved in letting Luke’s lackey up to my condo. I don’t want to know what Knox is going to threaten him with, although I could certainly use my imagination.

Instead, I do what I’ve wanted since I woke up: I go home.

KNOX

“Here’s the thing, Jerry,” I say, leaning one shoulder against the cold brick of the alleyway. He led me here, but I’m more than happy to use it to my advantage. He’s blocked in at this angle.

And while I’m not the greatest goalie, I can keep one man from passing me.

“You know him. You saw him. And the sooner you start talking?—”

“I got a call,” Jerry says. “To let him up. He didn’t say anything about Ms. McGovern’s place. Didn’t even ask. I just got a call saying that it was okay to use my fob and send him up to the fifteenth floor.”

“Which isAurora’sfloor, Jerry.”

He shrugs helplessly. “This was way above my paygrade, Mr. Whiteshaw, I assure you.”

He’s sweating.

“Tell me about this caller. You know them?”

“I do.”

“And they have the authority…?”

“Yes, yes, of course. Please, I didn’t realize—I feel terrible about what happened to Ms. McGovern. But I had no idea.”

“Who called?”

He stills. “I can’t?—”

“I don’t give a shit about what your manager said, Jerry. Who. Called?” I step forward. For once, I wish I took after Miles and carried around a damn folding knife. Not that this situation really calls for it. I’d be an idiot to threaten him with a knife in broad daylight. And what if that just made him clam up instead?

My movement is intimidating enough, I suppose. Because he stumbles back and raises his hands in surrender.

I just eye him. I mean, jeez, he’s terrified. And I haven’t even done anything.

“Why are you scared of me, Jerry?”

“I like you, Mr. Whiteshaw. But after I tell you, I’m going to either lose my job or my life. And I’m sorry for that. I’m so sorry?—”

“Who called you?” I interrupt. “Focus.”

“Luke Abernathy.”

Well, fuck my uncle.

He’s the Titans’ owner’s son—the one I caught Aurora talking to the other night. He doesn’t really have a hand in the day-to-day business of owning a team. Neither does his dad, for that matter. They’re the money, and our coach is the true talent.

But if he’s meddling around with Aurora, it means she knows something she shouldn’t.

So what is Luke Abernathy up to?
