“Yeah.” He pats my shoulder. “I appreciate our time together, Aurora. Take care.”

And with that, he heads back to the game. I stare after him for only a moment longer, then shake it off and continue to the locker room.

It’s quiet inside. The fun and games are out in the hall, clearly. Sitting on a bench in front of a locker is Camden Church, headphones in place and eyes closed.

And he’s alone.

I let out a huff and plant my hands on my hips.

Of all times for Knox to pull a freaking disappearing act.

I march forward and yank off the headphones, jumping back to avoid Camden’s surprised lurch. He focuses on me, and his gaze narrows.

“Where’s Knox?” I question.

“I don’t know.”

I roll my eyes and dangle his headphones from my fingers. “Like hell. You’re the captain, you know everything.”

“He’s probably on the roof.” Camden tips his head back. “Are you afraid of heights?”

“No.” I mean, yes, but he doesn’t need to know that. “Is that, uh, where?”

“Take a left out of the locker room, stairs go all the way up.”

Great. I toss the headphones back to him and stride out. I guess I just need to be honest with Knox. Because otherwise, I’m not really sure how I’m going to pull this off.

Staircase located.

By the time I hike up seven flights, I’m sweating and gasping for air. I press my hand to the wall and lean forward, taking slow, deep breaths. I like to stay in shape, but this is pushing it. Plus, we’re in Denver. The fact that it’s a higher altitude justsucks.

Lungs reined back under control, I exit the stairwell onto a concrete roof. It’s not big and open, like how I expected. There are air-conditioning units and all sorts of stuff. Duct work, whatever. It takes me a solid minute of wandering to find Knox.

He’s sitting on the ledge with one leg hanging over the edge.

“What are you doing?” I shout.

I rush forward and grab him, practically falling backward with his arm in my grasp. He comes with me easily—probably because there’s not much else holding him up—and we fall in a heap to the ground.

Ow.

He’s mostly on top of me, and he rises a little to look down at me. He brushes my hair out of my face.

“Aurora?”

“You idiot.” I push at him. “Get off me.”

“I wasn’t going to jump.” He doesn’t move.

“No, but you could’ve fallen.” Tears burn the backs of my eyes, and I try to will them away—without success. My eyes flood. “Damn it. Getoff.”

“Oh my God, you care whether I live or die.” His voice is full of something likewonder.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I shove at him. “Of course I do! You are the world’s biggest idiot and hypocrite and jackass all wrapped up in one hot skin suit.”

He laughs.

This is not a laughing matter.
