Less than five minutes later, a door far below bangs open. Footsteps pound on the concrete steps, and when Knox rounds the last landing, he doesn’t stop. He rushes up and drops to his knees in front of me, forcing me to lift my head.
“Is it your heart? Can you breathe?”
I shake my head. “Panic,” I wheeze. “I can’t do this. I can’t be your wife.”
He narrows his eyes. “You’re panicking because you’re having cold feetnow? Six years after you actually married me?”
Well,yeah.
“Jeez, Sunny, I didn’t realize you cared.” He touches my cheek, then brushes his thumb over my lips. “Just breathe. You’re okay.”
I try.
He puts his hand on my chest, grabs mine, and puts it on his. I feel his heart beating steadily, the rise and fall as he inhales and exhales. I follow his lead. My gaze is stuck on his lips, on the way he makes awhooshingnoise on the exhale.
“Okay?” he asks.
I bite my lip. “I just don’t have very many friends. They’reyourfriends.”
He blinks. “Who? The girls?”
“Obviously.”
He laughs. It bursts out of him, so loud that I almost flinch.Almost.
“They’re not my friends. Not after what I did to Willow. You want me to prove it to you?”
I raise my eyebrow. I don’t have that feeling of suffocating anymore, and I let him help me to my feet. “That sounds like a challenge.”
“You know it.” His gaze gleams. “So, how about it?”
“What do you have in mind?”

Greyson and Steele are also charged with running interference between Luke Abernathy and Sunny. So if he tries to get close to her, or threaten her, then they’ll step in. Which could be a good or terrible thing, depending on… well, on Luke Abernathy.

I take Aurora’s hand and lead her to the suite, pulling her in with me.
“Ladies,” I call. “Aurora was feeling a bit out of sorts. Worried about my wellbeing against my brother.”
I glance at her, and she frowns.
“She’s got a soft spot for Miles,” I continue. “She’s seen his dick, after all?—”
Aurora yanks her hand out of mine. “You’re relentless, aren’t you?”
“You’re the one who wanted to make friends, sunshine. I’m just helping?—”
