I pause, unsure if I should admit why I’m at the door. “I came to see Ellie,” I venture.

“Oh.” She looks at me curiously. “She left this morning.”

“Left?” My heart crashes to my feet. Maybe Ellie cares more than I thought. Did she see the photos when she woke up and bolt? Does she hate me?

“Yep. She took the early train.” She continues to stare at me.

“Did she say why she left?” I try to sound casual.

Kelsey’s eyes narrow. “I’m beginning to think Elle hasn’t been completely honest with me.”

I’m afraid to ask. “About what?”

“You.” She steps forward and peers at me. “Is something going on between you and my sister?”

“Yes.” I surprise us both when the word slips out.

“Seriously?” She puts her hands on her hips. “Wait a minute—I just saw pictures of you cozying up with Amber Hope. Are you two-timing my sister?”

“No,” I say, almost desperately. I should have thought about this before showing up on Kelsey’s doorstep. Explaining the situation to Ellie is one thing. Explaining it to Kelsey is entirely different, especially when she’s looking at me like she wants to hang me by my balls. She taps her four-inch stiletto on the marble tiles. I watch her foot closely—being impaled by a stiletto is not going to improve my day. “There is nothing going on with me and Amber Hope. We’re friends. We’ve been friends for years. That’s all.” I stumble over the words in my haste to get them out.

“I knew Ellie was lying. She was mad at me for meddling.” Her foot taps faster. Then, in a voice that is clearly meant to sound like Ellie, she says, “I would never sleep with Slater Jones.” She continues in her normal voice, “I should have trusted my instincts.”

A sudden thought pops into my head. “I thought you knew about us?”

Both of her eyebrows shoot up. “Us?”

“Ellie said…never mind.” It seems nothing about this day is going to go right. “Why did she leave?”

Kelsey’s expression turns to ice. “You should ask her.” She nudges me toward the street.

A second later, I’m staring at a closed door.

I make the two-block walk to Cam’s new office in record time.

“Your wife just kicked me out of your house,” I say as soon as I stalk into Cam’s office.

I put my hands on my hips and glower at him.

“I’ll call you back,” he says to whomever he’s got on speaker phone. He clicks off and raises his brow. “What did you do?”

It’s nice that he automatically assumes I’m to blame. “I stopped by to talk to Ellie.”

“Seriously?” He frowns and looks me up and down. “You slept with her.”

“Do I have a sign on my forehead?”

“The paparazzi put you in a relationship with Amber Hope. You show up at our door the same morning needing to talk to Ellie. Two plus two always equals four.” He rolls his shoulders and sighs. “I thought I sensed something the other night at my place, but I dismissed it. You’re my client, and she’s my wife’s sister.”

I bristle. “Your wife is the one who set us up.” Oops. Not sure if he knows about that. It isn’t his fault Kelsey wanted Ellie and me to hook up, so before he can question me, I say, “My relationship with Ellie isn’t any of your business. Or your wife’s.”

“I know.” He winces. “Kelsey is…overly involved in Ellie’s life. She’s overprotective, and if she thinks you hurt Ellie, she is not going to be subtle in her disapproval.”

My glare masks my hurt. Cam knows me, and he’s supposed to be my closest friend. It doesn’t say much for our friendship that he thinks I would hurt Ellie. “What the hell? She’s a grown woman who can make her own decisions. She doesn’t need anyone’s permission to sleep with a man.”

“Of course not.” He presses his palm into his forehead. “But she’s my wife’s sister. I’m going to have to sit across from her at Thanksgiving dinner for the next fifty years. Do you think Kelsey is ever going to let me forget the time I connected her sister with an athlete who couldn’t keep his pants zipped?” He looks away and starts drumming his fingers on his desk.

“Kelsey wanted us to hook up,” I practically shout, dropping into a chair. “She thought Ellie was lonely, and you thought I was lonely, so she came up with this scheme. She thought we would be good together.”
