I break eye contact just for a second—as if I’m thinking this over—but like a magnetic force, he pulls me back. “Preferably both.”

“And?”

“Someone I trust.”

Levi moves the bowl of chips to the table, and I inadvertently slide myself right next to him. I am flush to Levi’s side, encompassed by the warmth his body produces and tasting every bit of his summer breeze scent.

“You trust me?” he says, peering down at me.

“I do.” I swallow, wishing I had a mint—rather than cool ranch breath.

“And you’re sure I’m a good human being?” he says, his voice just a whisper.

“I know you are.”

He fingers a strand of hair back from my face, his touch lingering and erupting flutterings over every inch of my skin. “A good kisser?”

I have no answer for this. I don’t know anyone who’s a good kisser. I don’t know if I’m a good kisser—in fact, it could be just like riding a bike, I could be terrible at it.

His hands cup around my neck and jaw, tilting my face up to his. I flutter my eyes closed and goosebumps spread like a wild fire across my skin. I wait for contact.

Levi

Iam leaning in. I’m almost there. My stomach is a mess of fluttering.

Coco is right.

Dang it.

I have butterflies.

I have a boatload of butterflies and a plethora of feelings for Meredith. I shouldn’t, but I do. And now she’s asking and I’m giving in… so so easily.

Or at least I would have given in—had Miles’ ringtone not startled me back into the present. But it does, and with it, my palm moves in between our faces. When Meredith makes contact, it’s to the back of my hand.

Her eyes blink open, wide and startled.

“Sorry,” I murmur, pulling out my phone. “Hello?”

“Levi, she’s here!” My brother yells—an abnormal trait for Miles. I’d guess Meredith has no trouble hearing him.

“And Coco—”

“She’s great. Jude is more proud of her than anything I’ve ever seen before. Are you coming over?”

“Alice is sleeping—”

“I’ll stay with her,” Meredith says, giving me a nod.

“But Meredith is here.” Except my inner conscience promised Alice…

“She’ll be okay,” Meredith says. “You should go see your sister. I’ll tell her we made a trade.”She gives a one shoulder shrug. “She likes me.”

She doesn’t have to convince me. I am dying to see my sister and little Lulabelle.

“I’ll be there soon.” I hang up with Miles and stand, ready to go. “Alice should sleep through the night.”
