Miss you too, Ash. So much!

I even added a heart emoji and kiss for good measure.

We spent the next twenty minutes or so sexting, getting raunchier and raunchier with each reply we sent. It was fun and helped pass the time even though my stomach was still tying itself in knots the nearer we got to the time the shipment was due.

Ash

Got to go, sweetheart, that’s Marko confirmed. The chatter has started, and they are on their way. Take care, hide in the panic room with the others if necessary, and I will see you when this is all over!

That was his last message, and I felt sick.

I checked the time. It was just after nine p.m. This was it. It was really happening.

Me

Be careful!

I replied and prayed that he would be.

Just as I pressed send for the final time, Sonia burst into the room then.

“It’s time!” she cried. I nodded solemnly, and we headed down to the basement to join the others.

Anton was there with a man called Nicholas Wright, whom I learned earlier was Derrick’s boyfriend and several other men. The door to the panic room was open, and I saw that Sebastian had already taken Nonna, Letitia, Marta, and Magdalena inside. They were playing card games and, thankfully, looked quite calm.

Sebastian was armed, and it looked like Marta was too. So, not all the women were expected to be completely useless in a fight then. That was good to know because when this was all over. I was getting Derrick to give me more fighting lessons and Ash to teach me how to shoot.

The few civilian staff who worked at the Estate had been given a couple of days off to ensure they were not involved. So, it was only family, Bratva or Polish Mafia soldiers, Anton, and his men here now.

Sonia greeted some of the men and quickly introduced me before we took seats in front of the monitors with Vlad so we could watch the security feed. Just as we sat down, we saw Romi and Dariusz returning with Derrick. They came in via the secret entrance, and as soon as they got to the underground car park, Sonia stated she needed to talk to Romi and rushed back into the main house to meet them before anyone could stop her.

A few minutes later, Derrick and Dariusz came down to the basement to get an update from Anton. Sonia and Romi didn’t follow them, and I wondered what they were up to as Sonia had promised Ash she would stay downstairs with Nonna. I’d only known Sonia for a few days, but I already recognised her to be a bit impulsive. I’d thought I had been nervous, but she had been like a cat on a hot tin roof all day. I hoped she wasn’t going to do anything stupid and put herself at risk.

Thankfully, she reappeared around ten minutes later. She seemed a bit calmer, although she did look a little red-faced. Just as she sat back down next to me, the first shot rang out. Then another. It had begun. Shit!

The rest of the men left Nicholas watching over us and went to join the fight.

“If they get anywhere close to the house, you all get inside with Nicholas, lock the door and only open it when it is all over,” Derrick said, gesturing to the panic room, before following the others up the stairs so he could be on hand if there were any casualties.

I watched the attack begin, my eyes glued to the monitors, with my stomach churning. I didn’t think I had ever felt this worried or nervous.

Then all hell broke loose. Guns fired and men shouted, and all we could do was sit and listen, our eyes glued to the security cameras as they streamed the live footage from around the Estate.

Every now and then, a figure passed one of the monitors, but it was hard to tell if they were friends or foes most of the time. Watching everything through the monitors didn’t make it less frightening. Gunshots, fireworks, and mini-explosions were going off. It was hard to tell what noises came from the battle and what was part of the defensive cover-up. All I knew was that it was loud and utterly terrifying.

The battle raged on for what seemed like hours but was probably only around forty minutes. The various sounds became louder as the enemy neared the house but more sporadic as time went on until, eventually, there was silence.

Everyone held their breath as Romi radioed Nicholas to say it was finally over. As soon as the words were out, we all let out a collective sigh of relief.

Then Derrick appeared with the first of the wounded, and Sonia and I went to help.

All of the Broxy’s were dead, including their leader. Vlad had killed him, but not before he was wounded himself. Luckily, the bullet just entered his shoulder and went clean through, so Derrick made quick work of cleaning and dressing the wound.

As he did so, more of our wounded came for treatment. A large number of the men were injured, but none were badly hurt. There were a few knife wounds that needed stitches, but the rest of the injuries were bullet grazes, a few broken bones and cuts and bruises from hand-to-hand fighting. I cleaned up the lesser injuries while Sonia helped Derrick with the others. I couldn’t help noticing that she was especially attentive to Romi, cleaning his injury and fussing around him like a mother hen.

I definitely had my suspicions about those two. I hoped that if something was going on with them, and it was serious, Sonia’s brothers wouldn’t cause any issues over it. They were so overprotective of her that it was almost suffocating. Although after what had happened to Krissa, I could understand it.

Thinking about her brothers had me worried again. We had been told the battle at the lab location was still underway. We had been exceptionally lucky. Only a few of our men had died, but they were the traitors, and their deaths had been planned. I hoped that everyone at the lab location was just as lucky. I sent up another silent prayer for their safety.
