“What happened? What is it?” Kai asks, jumping out of the bed far more gracefully than I did. He puts himselfbetween me and the door to the room, looking around for the threat.

I stand up slowly, pulling my shirt down. What the fuck? This isn’t the shirt I went to sleep in last night. I look around to realize this isn’t the room I went to sleep in, either.

“Kai. . . what? How? What?” I stammer.

He turns around and looks me over in a way that’s almost clinical. “You’re ok?” he asks.

“No! I’m in clothes I didn’t go to sleep in, this isn’t my room, and you were half naked next to me!” I exclaim while gesturing to his mostly naked body. He’s only wearing black boxer briefs, tattoos and muscles on full display. It takes everything in me not to focus on the bulge in his boxers. I keep my eyes trained on his to prevent them from wandering. I doubt me blatantly checking him out will help our strained relationship.

“Oh. That,” he says, looking relieved. “You had a nightmare. I heard you screaming and couldn’t get you to open the door. I broke through and brought you in here. Your sheets were soaked. Willa changed you. We couldn’t get you to wake up.”

Looking at the door he pointed to, I can see the split wood and the broken door frame. He literally broke in to get to me. My heart beat faster knowing he did that for me.

“Why isn’t Willa here?”

“She was. You were still restless with her,” he says, rubbing the back of his neck and looking uncomfortable.

“But not with you?” I ask, knowing the answer. Kai has always made me feel safe. Even now, when I don’t know how he feels about me, I know I’m safe with him.

“Not with me,” he says, his eyes locking with mine. There’s always something behind them when he looks at me now. Something I can’t identify and want so badly to.

“Um, thanks. Sorry I worried you.”

Kai’s expression turns stern, and he nods. “I have to get ready for sound check.” He moves swiftly to the bathroom and slams the door.

I have so many questions I want to ask him. So many things that I think need to be said in order to close this gap between us. But I can’t be the only one who wants to close it.

Stepping over the broken wood, I find my suitcase and get dressed for the day. My phone is still on the charger, so I grab that, checking for any new messages.

Willa

You coming with us today?

Me

Can I?

We never discussed what my role would be. I don’t want to just tag along and not have a job. I need to talk to Cal about that later.

Willa

Of course you can! Meet me downstairs in ten?

Me

Sounds good.

Willa is already waiting for me in the hotel’s lobby when I get there.

“You left me with Kai,” I blurt out.

“Good morning to you too, sunshine.”

“Willa. You left me with Kai. I woke up and panicked because I didn’t know who was next to me!” I whisper-shout at her.

“It’s Kai. Stop acting like I left you with a stranger,” she scoffs.

“He may as well be,” I counter. Saying it out loud hurts, but it’s the truth.
