“I’m Saber,” she said laughing now, mostly from relief. “I just moved here.”

“Fuck yeah! Welcome,” Lozen said. “I hope you like the rain and the cold!”

“I don’t. I grew up on the beach.”

“Ok, well, what sports do you play?”

“I don’t play sports.”

Lozen laughed like that was a joke.

“Right on. Well, you’re going to fucking hate it here!”

“Awesome.” Saber chuckled.

“Where are you from?”

“Fernandina Beach, Florida.”

“Woah!” Lozen’s eyebrows shot up. “That’s pretty far! I don’t even know where that is. Is that like, near Miami?”

“Not at all.”

“I think I’d like Miami. Is it cool?”

“I don’t know, I’ve never been there. I’m from, like, North Florida. Long way away.”

“Ah, ok. Sorry, I’m supposed to be smart, but I don’t know anything about that part of the world.” Lozen laughed some more. “Do you miss it?”

“Uh, yep.”

Lozen’s face dropped a little with real sympathy.

“Oh, I’m so sorry. Do you like it here so far? I was kind of joking before, it’s not that bad.”

“I guess…” Saber sighed. “I had to move here because my grandma died. I never thought I’d actually live with my dad, but he works out here. In Seattle.”

“Oh, shit. I am really, really sorry.”

“It’s ok,” Saber said. “It’s been a tough few months. I’m adjusting. I just have to get through the school year. I’m sure it’s not that bad.”

“Wait ’til it’s six p.m. and looks like it could be midnight.”

“I heard it gets dark early.”

“The sun barely rises all day, it’s so cloudy, then all the light is gone by four thirty. I hate it. I’m applying to USC in L.A. so I can be in the sun all fucking day.”

“Isn’t that a pretty hard school to get into?”

“Oh definitely, for other people, but I’m a genius.”

“So it shouldn’t be a big deal.”

Lozen laughed.

“Iamplanning to be valedictorian.”

“Really?” Saber genuinely couldn’t tell if she was joking or not.
