“Itrulydon’t care. You’re bad for me, and this place is bad for you.”

“How am I bad for you, Ansel?”

He covered his face with his hands and sighed. For a fleeting moment, he looked boyish and sweet.

“Oh, Saber,” he groaned, then laughed. “Because Iwantyou.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“I want you, too,” she finally said, and he breathed, smiled, and pretended not to hear her.

“We can’t be together, Saber,” he said. “For a thousand reasons.”

“Because you’re a vampire?”

“Yes. I could kill you. Iwouldkill you, eventually.”

“What if I don’t care? What if I’m willing—”

He cut her off.

“You’re so selfish, Saber,” he said in that deep growl of a voice. “You’re so young andso, so fucking selfish! How do youthink it would makemefeel to be the cause of your death? Your dad works for me, I like him. It’s not just aboutyouand whatyouwant.”

Saber rocked back and watched him as he ran a hand through his fine hair. That’s when she saw the rip in his jacket under his arm and the black blood blooming there through his shirt.

“Why did you come back tonight, Ansel?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “I was worried you weren’t safe, that she would come back. You killed her changeling, and now Derek could take a year to recover from what your friend did to him. She’s furious. Who’s your friend, by the way?”

“Lozen. She’s our class valedictorian, probably. She applied to go to USC but they need to give her a scholarship, I guess.”

“How much money does she need?”

“She probably doesn’t need any money. She’s an amazing student. I’m sure she’ll get in and get whatever she needs.”

“If she was in Southern California, would you go?”

“Stop, Ansel, just stop. Why are you here?”

“I wanted to see you,” he said. “I’ve lost a lot of blood, and it’s stupid, but for a moment I thought—”

“I didn’t think you wanted to see me again for a long time.”

He reached for her then, and took her hand, turning it over, looking at her wrist, running his thumb over it.

“I wanted to see you again five minutes after I said that,” he said quietly.

She stopped him then and climbed into his lap.

“Saber.” His voice a groan in her ear, his breath so cold it made her shudder.

She kissed him and he kissed her back. Her tongue grazed his alluringly sharp teeth. She felt him shudder against her, felt him hardening beneath her. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her tight. She tilted her head to the side and leaned in,offering her neck. He made a sound, a low rumbling growl, and pressed his cold lips to her flesh.

“Saber,” he whispered, and she felt his tongue, then his teeth, first searching, each tiny movement sending perfect waves of need through her, then finding, then sinking with a quick tearing.

That feeling of falling swept her again, and she gasped softly. He pulled her tight against him, as if to keep her from slipping away, and she moaned.

The sound his mouth made, wet and soft against her neck, gave her shivers. She rocked against him, against his hardness, and his fingers tightened around the back of her neck, her waist. She could feel his strength returning to him as her own life seemed to flutter inside of her, so much more fragile than she’d thought.
