“So,” Mia said. “I have a list of addresses, houses where the vampires are. I say we wake up early on Saturday and just, I don’t know, just go for it.”

“What do you mean, ‘go for it’?” Saber asked.

“Break into their houses and kill them,” Elijah said.

“Ah, ok,” Saber said, and rolled her eyes.

“How many houses are there?” Doug asked.

“Only five,” Mia said. “They mostly live in groups, I think. One lives by himself.”

“Do you have the list?” Saber tried to sound casual, but she was getting more anxious by the second.

Elijah fished in his bag and pulled out a folded-up piece of yellow legal pad.

Saber took the list and looked over it.

“No,” she said, putting the paper down. “Not this one.”

Her finger landed on Ansel’s address.

Mia looked at her, her mouth a thin line.

“Because he’s your boyfriend?”

“He’s not my boyfriend,” she said. “But I know him. He’s not dangerous.”

“He is absolutely dangerous,” Lozen said. “But probably not dangerous toyou.”

“What?” Doug asked, confused. “Saber, youknowa vampire?”

“I didn’t know he was a vampire at first,” she said, turning to Doug. “I haven’t been lying on purpose or anything.”

“He lives off the blood of people,” Elijah said.

“And animals,” Saber pointed out, but Mia scoffed.

“And he told me it’s not easy to kill old vampires, that just because it’s daytime doesn’t mean they’re completely immobile. Can’t we kill the two we know are actually dangerous to high schoolers? To peoplehere?”

“Do you hear yourself?” Elijah asked. “Some people are worth protecting and some aren’t? It’s ok if they kill people, as long as they don’t kill peoplewepersonally know?”

Saber sat back in her chair.

“I can’t be a part of hurting him,” she said. “And I think if you try to hurt him, you’ll be putting yourselves in extreme danger.”

“How do you know? Becausehetold you?” Elijah asked. He was getting red in the face.

“Yes,” Saber said, “and I believe him.”

“Iknewyou were keeping something,” Mia said. “But I don’t understand you at all. Why are you even here if you’re on their side?”

“I’m not ontheirside!” Saber stood up, angry. “Lozen and I were almost killed the other night, and he saved us. I’m the only one of you that’s been threatened, so before you tell me how easy it is to decide what’s right or wrong, consider that. I’m the one they blame for Laurel getting staked. They want tokillme. This isn’t a game anymore.”

“It wasnevera game,” Mia snapped, standing up.

“Can I meet him?” Doug asked, his voice quiet.

“Ugh,” Saber groaned, putting her hands on her face. “I don’t know! I’ll ask him.”
