“Well you don’t fuckinghaveto, Saber. You can go wherever you want.”

Saber flinched.

“I’m sorry. I don’t know how it’s my fault you didn’t get a scholarship to the school you wanted to go to.”

Lozen took a deep breath.

“I’m sorry, but when I look back, I wonder what my life would be like now if I hadn’t met you. I wouldn't be worried about killing vampires, but I also wouldn’t be learning to be a witch. Sometimes I’m grateful to have a new meaning in my life, it was kind of a shit show before, but other times… I wish I could go back to that moment when we met and just… walk away.”

Saber felt tears spring to her eyes.

“That really hurts to hear,” she said, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.

“I’m sorry,” Lozen said, and Saber saw that she was crying, too.

“It’s ok,” she said, blinking and throwing her head back to stop the tears. “I just think of you as my best friend.”

“Oh my god, Saber,” Lozen said, crying harder. “Of courseyou’re my best friend. That’s what’s so fucked up! I love you, I just, I’m just, like, really fuckingscared!”

“I know.”

Sitting in Saber’s driveway, they hugged for a very, very long time.

“Saber, hey, I’ve missed you. Can we talk for a minute?”

Saber and Lozen stood in the foyer of her house, fresh off their crying jag. She had completely forgotten that her dad was coming home today.

“Dad, welcome back,” she said, feeling stupid.

“Thanks. Seriously, though, can we talk?”

“Like,alone?”

“If that’s ok. Sorry, Lozen, do you mind?”

“Not at all,” Lozen said. “I’ll just be in Saber’s room trying to eavesdrop.”

Saber went and sat down across from her dad in the living room. He was drinking a glass of wine and had the bottle in reach.

“So, Ansel promoted and transferred me today without any warning whatsoever.”

Saber flinched.

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, I’ll get a nearly 50 percent raise, and a fifty-thousand dollar move stipend.”

Saber gazed at him, not knowing what to say. She was terrified that she’d somehow reveal something about her relationship with him, or that she knew this might happen.

“Wow” she said, thinking that was pretty neutral.

“I can’t really figure out why he would do it.”

“Why did hesayhe did it?”

“Because the team in the California office needs better leadership.”
