“I wonawardsfor my paintings,” Saber said, not trying to sound like she was boasting. “I went to a summer intensive in Baltimore! That wasreallyhard to get into.Youpaid for it.”

“Ok, so is there, like, a painting club here?”

Saber struggled to get nachos onto her fork, but they were too soggy and gross for her to use her hands. She finally gave up and pushed her plate away.

“Maybe, I don’t know. How was work?”

“Good,” her dad said. “Great.”

“Did you work with Ansel today?”

“Why? Do you have a crush on my boss?”

Saber turned red and looked back down at her plate.

“The fact that he’s your boss is literally the only thing I know about him.”

“Sorry, I was just giving you a hard time. No, he doesn’t really come into the office. He does meetings at the end of the day, usually, or really early in the morning. And he sends us notes on our meetings. It’s weird.”

“What do you mean?”

“Like, I have a meeting with other managers, vice presidents, whatever, and we record it and send it to him.”

“Is that normal?”

Jim laughed.

“No, not at all, but no one’s going to tellhimthat.”

Saber nodded.

“Seriously, though, what do you need to get back into painting?”

She shrugged, leaning back and thinking.

“Most of my supplies were packed into those boxes you had shipped. They should get here soon.”

“Do you need lessons? There are a lot of artists on the island. Do you want a studio?”

Saber looked at him.

“Oh, do you have a spare art studio lying around?”

“You can have the room over the garage. It’s kind of unfinished now. There’s nothing in there and it has a great view.”

“What were you going to do with it?”

“I don’t know, turn it into a bar?”

Saber nodded, but she was actually excited at the thought of her own studio.

“If the light’s good, yeah, that would be cool.”

True to his word, Saber’s dad picked up his new Tesla on Thursday after dropping her off, and she drove her own gleaming black SUV to school on Friday morning. When school let out, Lozen walked with her to her car.

“Damn,” she said. “Fancy.”

“Yeah,” Saber said blushing a little. “It’s weird. I didn’t grow up with any money and now—”
