Lozen looked at her like she was stupid.

“What did you say to him about me?”

“Who? You think it wasAnsel?” Saber sputtered.

Lozen rolled her eyes.

“Yeah, Saber, I think it’s your weirdo boyfriend. Who the hell else would it be?”

Saber’s mind spun.

Later that night, she dropped Lozen off at her house before she headed home. It was so cold out, and she had a terrible, foreboding feeling that even a hot mug of tea couldn’t shake. She and Lozen had killed Derek and now Ysidra was after them.

Saber had seen Ysidra twice now, once at the party, entwined with Rex, feeding, and the night at the convenience store. She’d never gotten a good look at her, and not knowing what she looked like made her somehow more menacing, like she was in a horror movie where the monster had yet to reveal himself.

Then Ansel called. It was still so strange to see his name on her caller ID and to hear his ghostly voice through her phone.

“What did you do, Saber?”

“What? Me? Nothing! Why?”

“Ysidra paid me an unwelcome visit.”

“Oh?”

Ansel sighed a weary sigh.

“I wish you hadn’t done… what you did. I don’t really understand it.”

“I felt like I had to. I felt like they would kill my friends if I didn’t.”

“Well if she didn’t want to kill you before, she definitely wants to now. I think she was planning to spend the next century with… what was his name?”

“Derek.”

Ansel laughed.

“What a strange name to choose for yourself. Are you leaving your house again?”

“No plans to,” she said. “My dad is leaving again in the morning.”

“You should go with him.”

“I can’t.”

Ansel sighed, heavy and exasperated.

“I’ll be so glad when you’re in a new city, far away from all of this.”

“What about my friends? She went to Doug’s house, tore it apart. We spent the afternoon putting it back together for him.”

“Tell them not to go outside after dark and not to invite her in.”

“For how long? Forever?”

“Maybe she’ll get bored soon. I don’t know what to tell you, Saber. I wish you hadn’t started a fight with a vampire.”

“I wish I could come over,” she said, “after my dad goes to bed.”
