“What are you doing here?” she asked Sophie, who looked at all of them with an utter lack of curiosity.

“I have a message for you.”

“What?” Saber’s voice matched Sophie’s flat affectation.

“I have a key to the building. My master gave it to me,” Sophie said. “We have your friend.”

“Is she alive?”

“Yeah, she’s fine,” Sophie mumbled.

“How can I get her back?”

“Youhave to stay here with us and send your friends to getyourvampire.”

Saber stared.

“Why?”

“Becausehe’swho my master wants. Not you. It was neveryouor your stupid fucking friends.”

Saber nodded.

“Ok. Doug, you guys—”

“We’re not leaving you here!” Mia cried, but Doug didn’t look so certain.

“I’ll be fine,” Saber said, though she wasn’t sure.

She did believe the only chance they had was if Ansel came to their aid. She had seen what vampires could do, and if Ysidra was awake, they had no chance.

If she had Lozen, they’d have to play her game.

Mia gave her a long, strangled sigh, but Doug took her by the arm.

“I trust Saber,” Doug said, “and, for now, I trust her vampire friend.”

“You shouldn’t,” Mia said. “Vampires aren’t people. They just aren’t thesameas us.”

Saber snorted with a muffled laugh.

“You can say that again,” she said, “but he’ll come. He’ll help us.”

“Leave,” said Sophie to the others, “and I’ll let Saber in to see Lozen.”

“If she’s hurt, I’ll kill you,” Saber said, but Sophie only smiled a cool, dispassionate smile, like she really didn’t care.

After the others left, Sophie did indeed produce a small silver key and lead Saber around the side of the building to a service door.

Once inside, Saber noticed how the interior had a damp, mildew smell with just the faintest traces of antiseptic, which might have been her imagination. The nursing home had been a long-term-care facility, with rooms that looked more like bedrooms, with wallpaper and large picture windows, not that Saber got a good look as she followed Sophie through the dark corridors.

“What is all this about?” Saber asked, but Sophie wouldn’t look at her.

“Youknowwhat it’s about.”

“No, I don’t. Ysidra is that mad about us ruining her little sex club?”
