“Meet us at my house.”

“He just killed Elise and traded us for ten million dollars,” Sophie said, gasping, as they got into Saber’s Land Rover.

“He tradedSaberfor ten million dollars. He didn’t give afuckabout us.”

Saber met Lozen’s eyes for a moment.

“I didn’t know,” she said, and Lozen shook her head.

“It doesn’t matter now. We’re alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m sorry, too.”

Saber drove Sophie to her house. She was the last one left of her little clique, and she had a glazed, half-awake look in her eyes.

“I have no one to talk to about this,” she said, tears dripping down her cheeks. “Elise’s body is just going to turn up like everyone else’s and I’ll be alone.”

“At least you’re safe,” Lozen said. “Be grateful for that.”

“I don’t even care about being safe,” Sophie said miserably. “I’d go to a vampire right now if one would take me.”

“That’s fucking insane,” Lozen said, and looked at Saber, who stared straight ahead, her hands gripping the steering wheel so hard they were turning white.

“Would you?” Lozen asked, accusingly. “Would you go back to him?”

A tear ran down Saber’s cheeks.

“No,” she said, but her voice wavered. “He kills people, Lozen. I… I understand that now. I’m sorry, I didn’t… I didn’t really get it. I never want to hurt you or lose you again, and I’m sorry. I’m sorry about everything.”

Lozen sat back in her seat and looked at the road.

“I’m sorry, too. I know you… care about him, orsomething…”

She more thancaredabout him. She was in love with him, obsessively, unbearably in love with him. Maybe she would be for the rest of her life.

Or maybe not.

Maybe Ansel was right, that she’d forget about him eventually, but she didn’t think so.

Sophie got out of the car and dragged herself to her front door. She turned and looked at Saber and Lozen before she went inside. Her face was bereft, a void, a mask of raw hunger that would never abate.

“I wonder if I’ll always feel that way,” Saber said, looking at the wretched girl as she let herself into her house.

“It really felt that good, huh?”

Lozen didn’t sound like she really cared.

“It wasn’t just that, Lozen. I was in love with him.”

Lozen sighed a ragged sigh.

“I know he’s an immortal billionaire, and hot, and made you feel incredible, Saber, but at the end of the day he’s just a fucking dude.”

Saber laughed, wiping tears from her eyes.

“Yeah, I guess.”
