“No, maybe not,” she said, “but I think they are. I think she was involved with someone, someone who waspayingher with expensive shit, and they killed her, on purpose or on accident. I don’t know.”

“But that’s just afeeling.”

Lozen closed her eyes like she was tired of this particular argument, like she’d had it before.

“Yeah,” she said, “it’s just a feeling, but I trust my feelings.”

Saber nodded, not wanting to argue. Lozen was usually so pragmatic.

“I respect that,” Saber said, and it was honest.

Lozen laughed a little.

“I’ve always had these weird feelings about things. I probably sound crazy to you, but ever since I was a kid, sometimes I justknewif something was going to happen, or, I don’t know, I can justtellif someone’s lying. I think it’s just, like, sensitivity, intuition, not, like, magicor anything.”

Saber had to think about what Lozen was saying. She tapped her pencil on the armrest of the couch.

“So what does that have to do with the party?”

“Forget I said that,” Lozen said, interrupting Saber’s thoughts. “I probably sound so fucking crazy.”

“No,” Saber said, laughing. “I don’t think you’re crazy. I think you’re a really smart, sensitive person!”

Lozen laughed, put her face into a pillow, and screamed a little.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” she said, looking up at Saber. “I know that my cousin died, and I don’t believe it was an accident. And I think that girls at our school, Elise, Laurel, that whole clique, I think they still participate in whatever killed Shanna.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know! Everyone hears rumors. They’ll show up with a handbag that cost two grand and people will say it’s because they fucked some older rich guy at a party. I really don’t know.”

Saber felt a pang, thinking about Ansel. Did her attraction to him have something to do with his money? His power? Of course! But that was just a crush. She would never actuallyacton it.

“So there may be a weird prostitution ring on the island, and there are definitely kids who die after drinking and doing a lot of drugs… and you think those two things are related.”

Lozen laughed a little, but she didn’t seem amused.

“You make it sound so crazy.”

“I’m not trying to make you sound crazy. I’m trying to understand.”

“Ok, well, yeah. That’s about it.”

Saber nodded.

“Have you ever thought of going out with them?”

“I’m notinvited, Saber.”

“Why not?”

“Honestly? I think because I’m a talker. They know I’d run my fat fucking mouth.”

They both cracked up, releasing all the heavy tension in the room.
