“How rich?” Caroline asked, happy to gossip.
“He had an original Winslow Homer painting.”
“Ok.” Lozen nodded thoughtfully. “I don’t know much about European art, but I know they don’t put those in Happy Meals.”
“Winslow Homer was American, Miss Valedictorian,” Saber corrected.
“Ouch, ok, well I recognize the name so it must be expensive. What does this guy do again?”
“He’s the CEO of my dad’s company, Glacier.”
With that, the other girls went silent.
“What?” Mallory asked, sounding stunned.
“Ansel James?” Lozen said. “You had dinner at his house?”
“Yeah, that’s him. You know who he is?”
“Yeah,” Lozen said, looking at Caroline, “youdon’t?”
“No, not really.”
“He’s crazy,crazyrich,” Mallory said. “Like,crazy.”
“Yeah, I got that impression.”
“And there are like no pictures of him. It’s common knowledge he lives on the island because he helped pay for this huge park, like, ahugenature preserve that’s next to his house, but nobody knows what he looks like.”
“I know, I googled him,” Saber said. “I can tell you from experience he’s pretty hot. He looks twenty-five.”
“Billionaires can’t be hot, sorry,” Lozen said, taking a bite from her sandwich. “They’re a cancer on society and cancer isn’t hot.”
“Well, Lozen may not be interested in hot billionaires, but I am,” Caroline said. “If you go back over, invite me.”
“I don’t think I’ll be going back over.”
“But if you do?”
“If I do you’re all invited. Party at his house.”
“That’s all I wanted to hear,” Caroline said.
“Maybe we can fuck him and he’ll pay us in sunglasses!” Lozen squealed.
Saber cracked up, but she also felt herself blushing.
When she got home from school, her dad had picked up takeout from an Indian restaurant.
“Dad,” she said, pulling a stool up to the granite bar in the kitchen where they ate, “we have got to stop eating takeout. It’s so unhealthy.”
“I’ve needed a woman in my life to tell me things like that.”
“Gross,” Saber said, opening a plastic container of chicken tikka masala.
“What do you want to do instead of takeout?”
“Buy groceries like normal people?”
