Saber felt a shiver.

“I think I’m going to hang out with Lozen that night. I already told her I would.”

“Oof, passed over for Lozen. That hurts. You can bring her, but she’s somean, isn’t she?”

“Not to me.”

She got to her car and leaned against the side of it, looking back at him. He was as charming as he was insufferable.

“Why doesn’t Lozen like me?”

“Because you’re full of yourself.”

He laughed.

“Am I full of myself? Or do I justknowthat I’m incredible?”

Saber rolled her eyes.

“I don’t think I can.”

“Talk to Lozen.”

“Fine.”

It was three thirty, and the sky was already gray and darkening, like the sun had tried to come out, but failed, and was giving up entirely. She sat, waiting for Lozen, blasting the heat.

“I don’t think it’s one of those kinds of parties!” Saber insisted in the car ten minutes later. “We’ll drive ourselves, we won’t drink. I just want to hang out with Rex.”

“No drinking, and you’re going to hang out with Rex the whole time? Wow, that sounds like a fuckload of fun.”

Saber went silent for a moment.

“Sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to pressure you. I did tell him I wouldn’t go without you, though.”

“I get it, all the cool kids are having drug-fueled prostitution orgies and you feel left out.”

Saber laughed.

“I don’t even think it’s like that. Rex was so casual about it. I think it’s just a regular hang out.”

“It’s at Laurel’s house?”

“Yeah.”

Lozen sat for a minute and thought about it.

“If you pick me up, I’ll go,” she said. “But we have to leave by ten thirty.”

“That’s early.”

“Those are my terms.”

“Ok. Fine.”

“And no drinking until we know what’s going on.”

“Fine!”
