Then, after they’d walked around the side of the house, he kissed her.

She had kissed boys before, and she thought Rex was attractive, but something, maybe the damp cold and dark, made her feel disconnected and absent from the kiss, even when she kissed him back.

She wanted to like it, wanted a moment of pleasure, but she just felt detached.

“You’re so fucking hot. Let’s go upstairs,” he said to her, leaning in, kissing her neck.

“No, I promised Lozen I would drive her home.”

She pulled away from him. She suddenly felt the weight of leaving her home, all her sadness from missing her grandma, everything. Rex was a stranger, and she didn’t want to be with a stranger right then.

“Seriously?”

“Sorry, I’m in a weird mood.”

“Uh, ok,” he said, adjusting himself and laughing a little like he was annoyed.

“Let’s hang out another time, ok?”

“We’re hanging out now.”

“I have to go,” she said, feeling irritated.

She slipped away, back into the house, and looked for Lozen. She heard her before she saw her.

“…if you don’t know what something means and it’s from someone else’s culture, DON’T FUCKING WEAR IT! That’s what cultural appropriation is. How hard is that? How fuckinghardis that?”

Lozen had done a few shots and was having an animated argument with a guy named Marc. He stood almost a foot tallerthan Lozen but was backing up like he was afraid she might bite him.

“Lozen,” Saber said, walking up and slipping an arm around her, “you ready to go?”

“Go? We just got here! Me andMarchere are having anexcellentconversation.”

“You said you wanted to be home by ten thirty.”

“Nowayis it ten thirty.”

“It’s almost eleven,” Marc said, glad for the intrusion. “Great talking to you though, Lozen.”

“Really?” Lozen almost whined.

“Yeah, and, I don’t know, I’m not really feeling it. I think I just want to go home.”

Lozen seemed to sober up and nodded.

“Can I have one more beer, then we’ll head out?”

“Sure.”

They walked out to the patio and Lozen grabbed a beer out of the cooler. They stood together for a minute, staring into the fire, a little removed from everyone else.

“I don’t think I’ve ever clicked with someone as fast as I have with you,” Lozen said. “I’m a little drunk, but it’s true. I really like you, Saber.”

Saber put her arm around Lozen’s shoulder. She didn’t feel like she had to say anything.

They watched as Rex picked up a rock and threw it at a raven sitting on a low tree branch. He missed it by a few yards and it flew away.

“He’s such a fucking idiot,” Lozen said.
