“I didn’t take any on purpose,” she said, and laughed. “But, yeah, I think I am. I feelgreat, though.”

“Somebody drugged you? At that party?”

“They wouldn’t do that,” she said. “Everyone there was so nice and good and so…”

She started running her hands over the satin of her dress, and it felt incredible. She forgot what she was trying to say.

She looked over at Ansel, who was so,sogood looking, and caught him looking at the exposed flesh of her thigh.

It made her feel warm all over to see him looking at her, but when she tried to make eye contact, he was staring at the road again.

“Ansel,” she said, “do I just seem like… like a kid to you?”

He looked at her, and she noticed the tiniest smile on the corner of his full, perfect lips.

“Most people seem like kids to me, Saber.”

“Where are you taking me?”

“To my house.”

“I love your house somuch, oh my god. It’s sobeautiful. I love all yourart.”

“I would much prefer to take you home, but I don’t think your father would appreciate his boss bringing his daughter home in the middle of the night in the state you’re in.”

“I feelreallygood, it’s fine. We’ll just tell my dad you found me like this on the side of the road. He’ll understand.”

Ansel laughed quietly at the thought.

“If it’s all the same to you, I’d rather not have the conversation.”

Saber watched Ansel’s hand on the stick shift and the sight made her feel an undulating desire that made her shudder.

She reached forward and touched his hand. It was cool and felt so nice, his flesh soft and appealing.

“Please don’t.”

“Sorry,” Saber said, pulling her hand away.

“It’s fine. You’re on drugs.”

“No,” Saber said. “I liked you before I took the drugs.”

“You don’t know me, Saber.”

“You don’t like me?” She made a pouting face.

“You seem like a very nice young woman.”

“I’m nice,” she said. “But I could be not nice, too.”

“Saber, you’re very beautiful, you’re very bright, and I think you should stop talking. Tomorrow you’re going to remember all this and wish you’d had restraint.”

“No, these are myrealfeelings. Like, they’re the realest feelings I’ve everhad.”

Ansel sighed, and she noticed they were pulling into his driveway. With a smooth gesture he clicked the opener for the gate, never once slowing down as he glided up the drive and slid into the garage.

Ansel opened the car door for Saber and led her through a door in the dark garage into a hallway that led to the perfect, clean, industrial kitchen.
