“I’ve told you everything I have in order toquenchyour curiosity, not inflame it. I am not dangerous to you, but the other vampires are.”

“Why aren’t you dangerous to me?”

“Because your father works for me. Because I’ve gotten to know you and I like you.”

“But you said you can feed on someone without killing them.”

“It’s still very dangerous. I could kill you on accident. I’ve done it many times.”

“If you lost control?”

She saw the fangs again. He was clearly aroused thinking about drinking her blood. The idea excited her enormously.

“How many people have you killed?”

He laughed quietly, and his fangs retracted.

“I honestly couldn’t even make a guess. How many sandwiches have you eaten?”

The answer gave her a chill.

She wanted to excite him again, to see his fangs.

“What does it feel like? To drink blood?”

He gave her a searching look, like he suspected she was trying to provoke him.

“Satisfying,” he said. “Intense, for both parties, similar to, uh, the buildup before an orgasm, but almost in reverse. A burst of pleasure, I feel it, you feel it, it intensifies for a moment, then a simmering, waning satisfaction until all you’re left with is… death.”

“I want to feel it,” Saber said, looking him in the eyes.

He smirked.

“It would be safer for you to try heroin. I have some things to do tonight, Saber. Is there anything else you’d like to know?”

For a moment, she wanted to tell him that Derek had come to her house and threatened her. Then she thought better of it.

It was almost ten. She needed to go get Lozen.

“Can I come back if I have more questions?”

“I’ll give you my phone number. Call me if you really need me, and please text before you come over again. I’m very busy and I don’t think that entertaining you is a very wise thing for me to do. Though I do enjoy your company.”

He wrote his phone number on a pristine piece of card stock with a gilded edge and handed it to her.

She wanted to kiss him. She felt her heart thump. Still, she let him walk her to the front door without touching him. It took genuine restraint.

“Have a good night, Saber,” he said kissing her lightly on the cheek, so that his cool lips barely grazed her flesh. “Stay safe.”

Saber was at Lozen’s house at almost exactly ten.

“What the fuck, Saber! I didn’t realize you’d be so late.”

“Sorry,” she said, “I was at my dad’s boss’s house and I lost track of time.”

“Ansel James? Why? Are you sleeping with him?”
