When we reemerged at our newest destination, the portal key we’d been given from the SF snuffed out of existence. I’d followed the hunter’s instructions precisely, yet when we were in another alleyway, I couldn’t help but frown.

Given the tall buildings on either side of us and the underlying scent of rotting garbage in the air, we were in a second city. White clouds drifted high above, barely visible through the narrow strip of sky above the alley’s floor. In the distance, a bridge stood out. Similar to the land of Chicago, a single street ran perpendicular to the alleyway’s mouth.

I sighed. “The species of this realm do seem to prefer these unpleasant, narrow streets between buildings.”

The hunter, having already been waiting in the alleyway before we arrived, just shrugged. “Wait here. This won’t take long.”

Before any of us could comment, the Fire Wolf disappeared through a brick wall.

“Ock, is he a master at illusions as well?” Nish went to the wall, but when he placed his palm on it, his hand didn’t push through the solid surface.

“Not an illusion.” I also placed my hand on the cool red stone. “Strong magic, though. This wall is hiding something.”

“Any idea what?” Ilara asked. Annoyance strummed from her along our bond. I knew she was still irritated that I hadn’t revealed my final affinity to her.

“Your guess is as good as mine.” I placed a hand on her waist and leaned down, nuzzling her neck. She pushed me away at first, but when I nipped at her skin, she began to soften.

She sighed. “Why can’t you just tell me what your last affinity is?”

“Would it bring you peace if I did?”

“It would certainly appease my curiosity.”

I kissed the dip of her throat, right where it met her collarbone. “How about I show you instead, next time I’m able to?” When I lifted my head, a small smile was tugging at her lips.

“Can you show me now?”

I chuckled. “I can’t, honestly, but I will when we get home.”

Her smile grew. “Now I’mreallycurious. Do youpromise to show me? No more games, no more guessing?”

“Yes, my love. If it’s bothering you that much, I’ll show you when we’re done with this realm.”

The irritation that had been flowing from her eased. She leaned up on her tiptoes and wrapped her arms around my neck. A low growl rumbled in my chest when she pressed her body flush against mine.

“Thank you.”

I gathered her to me, kissing her in earnest while running my hands along her soft curves. “If I knew I would get this kind of response, I would’ve promised to tell you a long time ago.”

A laugh spilled from her lips, and my guards snickered.

“Do you need us to give you some privacy, my prince?” Haxil asked with a bemused smile.

“Haxil!” Ilara admonished.

The guard shrugged. “No judgment here.”

Nish nodded. “It wouldn’t be the first time one of us fucked a female on the streets. Sometimes you just need to make do with what you have.”

Ilara’s cheeks turned so red that a rumble of laughter shook me. “They’re just trying to rile you. They don’t actually engage in provocative activities in alleyways. At least, not regularly.”

My mate hid her face against my chest. “Is it horrible that their attempts to rile me are working?”

I chuckled and whispered, “Just give it anotherhundred winters. You’ll be so used to their crude humor by then that you won’t bat an eye.”

“Lovely. I look forward to the future.”

I laughed just as the hunter materialized through the wall. When I beheld his dark expression, my amusement fled. “Did you find the warlock?”
