Hayes glances up at us. “You could sit in Jimbob’s lap, man. He has nice thighs.”

Braxton clears his throat and looks away.

“Come on. Sit,” I say, and he shakes his head.

“I can sit on the ground.”

“There are snakes out here,” Hayes says and Braxton looks conflicted, but then the sky lights up and his protests go ignored.

I sink down on the chair and turn my gaze up to the sky. Braxton is standing next to me, his head tilted up as the stars start to fall above us. My eyes turn toward him, my gaze traveling across his body, and then his eyes swivel to meet mine.

“What are you looking at?” he whispers, and I turn my attention back to the sky.

Saying nothing seems rude and my parents didn’t raise me to be anything but polite. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all. But I don’t know how to answer. I want to say I’m looking at him, but resist. Don’t think he’d like that.

We are silent for a moment and then suddenly my chair gives a mournful creak and breaks in half, my entire body tumbling to the right and into Braxton who is standing next to me. He stumbles onto his ass, and my face lands right in his crotch.

“Dude!” Ryan calls out just as Hayes chokes on his beer mid-laugh. I scramble to sit up, Braxton on his elbows staring down at me. His eyes are wide, his chest heaving.

“Sorry. So sorry,” I murmur, grabbing on to his thighs and pushing up. And in that moment when our bodies connect, I note that he has really nice legs under those dark jeans. I wouldn’t mind seeing them. Wouldn’t mind touching them a little longer. But the way he’s seething, I know he wouldn’t want that.

I remove my hands and push myself to a stand. I glance down at Braxton and watch as he rubs at his chest.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine,” he says and then quickly stands up, brushing the back of his pants off. I stare a little too long at his movements, and he rolls his eyes at me. Well, it’s not my fault that he’s so appealing.

He’s not at all my type, but for some reason, I can’t stop looking at him. It doesn’t help that he hates me either.

Seems I want to go for someone who isn’t interested in me.

“You can sit on my lap, big boy,” Hayes offers me, and I laugh, settling on his thick thighs. I’m bigger than him, and I know that this probably doesn’t feel good, but I want him to regret being an idiot.

“Shit, man,” Hayes says as he tries to adjust me on him.

I let out a loud laugh.

“You offered,” I say, and he huffs behind me.

“Yeah, it was mostly a joke.”

I settle farther into him, and Hayes grunts. I glance over and see Braxton with his arms folded across his chest, scowling at the two of us.

“You can join,” Hayes says with a laugh, and Braxton scoffs.

“No thanks.”

He turns his attention up to the sky, and I can’t tear my gaze away from him. He’s so intriguing. The angry way he holds himself, the way he seems to keep everyone at a distance. And yet, he’s here. He came all the way out here.

Suddenly, Braxton turns and stares at me, swallowing roughly. I can see his Adam’s apple bobbing before he quickly looks away. His shoulders tense for a moment and then he turns around and stalks off.

I watch him go for a minute before pushing myself up and following him. Something is wrong, and I worry that if he goes too far into the fields, he may get turned around and lost. It’s happened to me a few times. There’ve been a handful of nights I’ve spent in a field because I was too lost.

“Wait up!” I say, jogging up to him. His pace only quickens, but I’m faster.

My hand reaches out and clasps onto his shoulder, but he spins around and pushes against my chest.

I stumble back in shock, my hands lifted in surrender as he comes for me again.
