His cheeks are slightly flushed as he cuts into the meat and places a piece in his mouth. I try not to stare because I don’t want to be creepy, but I can tell he’s enjoying it. He even likes the green beans and potatoes I roasted on the grill.

“You’re right,” he says around a mouthful. “These aren’t half bad.”

I beam at him and then focus on eating my dinner. We chat for a while about silly things like work and the farmer’s market until we’re done, and then I bring out a batch of cookies my mom made me a few days ago. He takes one reluctantly, and as soon as his teeth take a bite, he lets out a small moan.

“Good, huh?” I say, watching as his tongue peeks out and swipes the crumbs from his lips.

“Yeah.”

“Sometimes sweet is good,” I say, and he nods, quickly finishing it off, and I offer him a second one, but he turns me down, moving to the sink instead and helping me wash the dishes.

I like standing next to him like this, working in tandem. He washes and I dry, and when we’re both done, the silence that was ignored while having a task at hand now seems to feel heavy. And I can see Braxton start to get nervous once more.

“I should probably go,” he says, and I nod, not really wanting him to leave. He could stay here forever if he wanted, and I’d probably let him.

He walks over to where Abra-ham is and pets him before ruffling McMuffin’s head.

“You have a nice place,” he tells me when he returns. “You did real good, Jimbob.”

“Thanks and you’re welcome anytime.”

He nods, his lip ring being pulled between his teeth. “Thanks. For dinner and the creek.”

My dick twitches, and I nod again, wanting to kiss him, but not wanting him to be spooked.

“I’ll, uh, wash your clothes and give them back to you later. You can wear mine home.” I like that idea. Love that he’s gonna wear my clothes home, maybe even sleep in them. Makes my whole body shiver.

He bobs his head and shifts on his feet, neither of us moving toward the front door.

“Should go,” he says, and yet we both just stand there.

“Will Ryan be sleeping in your bed tonight?” he blurts, and I stare at him for a moment, wondering where that came from. I slowly shake my head but then shrug.

“I dunno. He does what he wants.”

He glances up at me and his hands tuck into the pocket of the hoodie he’s wearing.

“I’d rather he didn’t.”

It’s a small admission, but it makes my heart flutter.

“Alright. I’ll make sure he doesn’t.”

That seems to make his face soften, and before I know it, he’s moving toward the door and walking outside. My heart is thundering in my chest with each step as I follow him. I want to kiss him again, want to feel those plump lips against my own, but I don’t know if I should make the first move.

We stop in front of an old, rickety car, and he pulls the door open, turning and leaning against it.

“See you around,” he says, and I nod, putting my hands in my pockets to keep them away from him.

But he shocks me by groaning lowly and grabbing at my shirt. He tugs me forward and presses his lips to mine. His head tilts and he licks into me, tasting me, our tongues tangling until he finally pulls away, panting slightly. For me, it didn’t last nearly long enough. I’m left breathless and hungry, but he seems to have gotten what he wanted because he gently pushes me away, climbs into his car, and takes off.

I watch him go and think about the past few hours. I know so much more about him than I did before, and while he still doesn’t make sense to me, he is starting to.

I’m just gonna have to be patient until I’ve figured him out.

And boy, oh boy, my mama raised me to be a patient man.
