My boyfriend. I can’t stop thinking about that. I wasn’t sure he’d like that label, and I didn’t want to push him, but man, was I happy to hear it come out of his mouth.

“You’d make a great dad,” I say as Braxton feeds Abra-ham some grapes.

“Yeah, maybe,” he says, but now I can’t stop thinking about that too. Him with kids, us building a family, and me expanding this house to fit us all.

“Hell yes, you would be.”

“You thinking about this, Jimothy?” he asks with a grin, and I can’t help but nod shyly, my cheeks heating. I can’t hide how I feel about this guy.

Just can’t help myself.

When we get to the street dance, I look around at all the familiar places on Main Street. I grew up here and walking around downtown is like traveling back in time. So many memories.

Right now though, there are no cars parked in the spots in front of the small businesses that line the street. The whole road is blocked off with construction barriers, and there are two cop cars parked on opposite ends of the road to make sure no one gets too rowdy.

There’s a live band up on a makeshift stage on one side, just groovin’, and when I glance around, I see a couple of food trucks that smell delicious. The street lamps are already on as it’s starting to get dark, and the street is full of people I’ve known my whole life.

I see Jack and Maureen standing nearby. Damn, but they’re cute as pie. They were high school sweethearts and we all knew they’d end up together.

Kinda like I hope that Braxton and I will. But time’s a wastin’. Without a word, I pull Braxton over to the two of them in a hurry. They have their two kids with them, both of them rocking their bodies off-rhythm with the music.

“Jack, Maureen,” I say as they turn with wide smiles in my direction. “Hey there. Look, I wanted to introduce you earlier, but I forgot and it was awfully rude of me. This is my boyfriend, Braxton.”

Their smiles widen, and Jack reaches out his hand for Braxton’s, and they shake hands. “Nice to meet you, Braxton. You got yourself a good man here.”

I blush at that, but Braxton just bobs his head in agreement. “You’re telling me. Nice to meet you.”

They release hands and then Braxton reaches one out to Maureen, who instantly takes it. “So nice to meet you, Braxton.”

“You too.”

The young kids are pulling on Jack, pleading with him to dance, and I offer to take one for a small spin on the dancefloor—or the street since that’s what it is. Maureen gladly accepts my offer, so Jack and I take the kids out into the middle of the street. This leaves Braxton and Maureen to chat and is probably giving Maureen a little bit of a break. The kids are young, but man, do they have some energy. They’re like Abra-ham on juice.

After one dance turns into three and that turns into five, I’m damn exhausted. This is harder than hauling hay all day. But I can’t stop smiling at them, and they look like they could go all damn night. Thankfully Jack sees me wilting and we eventually make our way back to Maureen and Braxton with the kids in tow. I can see my boyfriend’s eyes following me with something that looks like pride on his face, and when I approach, he leans in, giving me a quick kiss before pulling me over to dance with him.

And right then and there my energy is restored.

I could dance all damn night with Braxton in my arms.

After the Main Street dance, we move into a bar with Hayes, Beck, and Ryan. Braxton seems a little reluctant to go, but I pull him along anyways. I want him to hang out with my friends. I really want to show him off and announce to everyone that he’s mine.

I’m real damn proud of him.

Braxton can’t legally drink yet, but I order a beer and let him sip on it. What are they gonna do? Arrest me? Not when the sheriff is here with us.

Ryan places a large order of food, despite all of us having eaten already, but then again, we did work it off dancing. And I could definitely put down some more food.

“Man, Ryan, what the hell are you doing?” Hayes asks, nudging his side. “Are you trying out for a bar eating contest?”

“Hell yes. I would if I could. I could put all that down and you know it.”

“He can. He can put down an entire block of cheese,” Beck says, and Ryan blushes at that, like it’s a compliment.

I nudge Braxton, wondering if he’s seeing this too. I mean, he has to, right? But then again, I didn’t think Beck was into men. But what do I know? I know very little, except when it comes to farm stuff.

And tractors.

And Braxton. Though I could know more. I always want to know more about him.
