Things are sodamn pure after that. Braxton and I spend the next few days kissing, cuddling, and fucking as much as possible. When we’re separated while at work, we text one another, updating each other about our day.

I’m in the middle of feeding the cows when Braxton appears in the barn, his lips turned down. His eyes are slightly watery, and I drop what I’m doing immediately and stride toward him.

“Braxton, what’s wrong?”

He sniffles and glances away, the sleeves of his black sweater pulled over his hands.

“I just…I need a hug.”

I nod and pull him into me, crushing him against my chest. He sighs as I hold him near, his fingers digging into my back.

“Are you okay?” I ask, and he shakes his head, turning his gaze up to meet mine.

“My mom’s coming home. And she’s bringing him.”

I cock my head and my fingers brush his cheek. “Who?”

“The guy who took her away for this mini-vacation bullshit. Fuck, Jimbob, this isn’t something that happens. They don’t ever stay this long or go to all this trouble.”

“Is this a bad thing though? It seems like maybe he’s serious.”

He shakes his head like he’s so certain, and I know it’s because he’s been heartbroken before. “He’s not. They never are. He’s just fucking with her, dragging it out.”

He says this, but over the past few days, I’ve noticed that he’s told me how this time does feel different. Usually, it comes out after he receives a text from his mom. And I just listen, trying to keep my thoughts to myself. I don’t know the trauma Braxton’s endured. I don’t understand the toll it’s taken on him. I know that he has a hard time holding on to hope when it comes to things ending well.

But I swear, I have a good feeling about this one. And he does too, he just doesn’t want to believe it. I don’t think he can let himself believe it.

I want to help him the best I can. “Well, when do they get back?”

“Tomorrow, and I…I don’t want to meet them alone. I can’t fucking do it.”

I nod and pull him against me once more. I don’t make him come right out and ask me. He doesn’t need to do that. “I’ll be there. We’ll do it together.”

He sighs, sinking into me, and when we finally part, he asks to help me with my chores. And of course, I say yes.

I love when he’s near me. I want to spend all damn day with him. If it were up to me, Braxton would work right here on this farm. But I know that he has to keep his job at the feed store because his mom’s employment history isn’t all that great. He wants to make sure that bills are getting paid.

But I’ve seen what he’s done with our website, and even Beck’s, and damn, he’s talented. Marty at the feed store even complimented him on the one he made for their business, and Braxton nearly disappeared into the floor. He didn’t stop blushing for ten long minutes. I think this could be what he’s meant to do, but I’m afraid to push him too much.

Don’t know why he’s so embarrassed. He’s damn good at what he does.

In fact, next month we’re gonna get our online store up and running, with things like our homegrown products listed as well as those cute little farm animal treats. It was a damn good idea and we’re working with another local farmer to make this goal a reality.

My mom’s helping as well, of course.

And my grandpa told us we should sell weed because he’s been growing some in his closet.

I chose to ignore that little tidbit of information.

When we finally make it back to my house and shower, we sit outside and pick at some leftovers from last night.

It’s then that my dad and stepmom show up.
