CHAPTER 1

HAWK

Late January 2004

Corvus Pub, Feannag Village

New Forest

Avy was in her happy place, behind the bar in the pub that she ran for the MC. My eyes hadn’t left her since I arrived earlier this evening. They never really did when I was in her presence. In a few short months, it would be nearly a year since I’d first laid eyes on her. And I was close to making her completely mine. I still couldn't believe I was lucky enough to go home with her every night.

I hadn’t been looking or interested in a relationship when I’d arrived at the Crows. I’d come out a very toxic one that had sent me travelling throughout Europe trying to run from the sick feeling of betrayal it had left me with.

How life changed in the blink of an eye; a few years ago, I’d been planning on marrying my long-term girlfriend as soon as I left the military. We’d been together for nearly eight years by that time, having met in our early twenties. Our relationship hadn’t been perfect; we’d fought, mostly about how much money she spent on what I thought were unnecessary expenses. But I’d loved her, or I thought I had. Now I knew different. What I’d feltfor my ex wasn’t love, not like the love I felt for Avy. But while we’d been together, I’d been faithful. We’d made plans, bought a house, everything that went with a serious relationship. Or so I thought at the time.

Except fate stepped in. There had been a mess up with my release dates and I’d ended up getting released earlier than expected. I’d rushed home, not telling her I was coming early. I was in such a hurry to see her. Rachel, the woman that I was meant to be spending the rest of my life with.

The taxi had dropped me off and I’d been surprised to see her car parked in front of the house. I’d thought that she’d be at work. She worked as a personal assistant for some company director and had done so for nearly four years.

Unlocking the door, I had been about to call out when I’d heard them. Clenching my hands, I’d taken a deep breath, and had quietly put my duffle bag down. Silently I’d walked up the stairs to our bedroom already knowing what I was going to find, but I wanted to see it with my own eyes. Taking my phone out, I got ready to take photographic evidence of her infidelity. I knew the pictures may not be clear, and I wouldn’t know if they would be any good until I got to a computer to have a look at them. I knew Rachel well and if I didn’t have some form of proof proving that she’d cheated on me, she’d make my life hell to get what she could out of me.

Opening the door, I expected to find her boss. I certainly wasn’t expecting to find the person that I did ploughing into Rachel in long hard thrusts. The betrayal I felt when I recognised the back of the person by the tattoo that was on his shoulder. A tattoo I’d inked myself.

The person pumping in and out of my girlfriend was none other than my brother. The brother that was married with two children, who’d promised he’d keep an eye on my girlfriend while I was away. Well, he’d certainly done that and more, considering the swell of her stomach. It was the click of my phone taking a photo that alerted them they weren’t alone.

I didn’t even feel bad that he’d had to stop mid thrust.

Bending, I picked his pants up from the floor and threw them at him.

“Get out,” I growled softly.

“Kevin, what are you doing home?” Rachel whispered in a panicked tone.

My brother chose that moment to speak. “Look, Kev,” he said placatingly, holding up his hand.

I turned to him, disgust clear in my face as I pointed a finger at Rachel’s clearly pregnant belly, “Is that yours?”

Shamefaced, he nodded before saying quietly, “Yeah.”

I was fuming. How I kept control to this day, I have no idea. I wanted to kill him. My own flesh and blood. The betrayal cut deep.

“And Mel, the kids?”

“She left me, took the kids back up north to her family.”

“So what Mike, you thought you’d just move into my house? The house I paid for and continue to pay for. Fuck my girlfriend, live here free and I’d not have anything to say about,” I yelled at him.

Rachel made the mistake of speaking. “Kevin, you need to calm down.”

Turning to her, I took a deep breath and breathed slowly out, then pointing an angry finger at her, I sneered, “And you! My fucking brother, Rachel. Of all people, you pick my brother to betray me with. Not only that, but you’re also having his baby. What, didn’t you think I’d notice? I’ve not been home for sixteen months. There’s no way you could have passed this baby off as mine.”

Rachel lifted her chin at me, saying defiantly, “I wasn’t going to. Mike and I are together now. I was waiting for you to get home to tell you.”

I let out a bark of angry laughter at her words, “Really, well consider me told. Now, pack your shit up and get out.”

She let out a shocked gasp, “But this is my house, you can’t kick me out.”

“No Rachel, this is my house. It’s in my name and I pay the bills for it, which means you’re squatting.”
