We head into the kitchen, and I make some sandwiches.

“That’s the second time I’ve seen you cooking today. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were a chef,” Maverick says.

“I wouldn’t call putting jam on a sandwich cooking. But thanks for the compliment.”

He moves closer and lifts my chin with two of his fingers.A shiver runs down my spine, and all I can think of is that I want more of his touch.A lot more.

“You’re such a considerate person,” he says in a deep voice.

“You’re only just now noticing, huh?”

He shakes his head.“I’ve noticed you forever, Little Sloane.”

“What do you mean?”

“When we were younger, I had a thing for you, but out of respect for your brother, I didn’t do anything about it.”

I frown.“My brother shouldn’t have a say in your love life.Or mine.”

His thumb finds my mouth, and my knees almost give way as he brushes my lips.“No, he shouldn’t.I was a fool back then.I know better now.”

“Oh, yeah?”

He nods.“I know not to let the love of your life walk away.Especially not without kissing her. When you showed up at my cabin, all my feelings for you came back in full force.I thought that only happened in movies.”

“You have feelings for me?”I ask, but there’s no time for him to answer.

His lips are already on my mouth. My stomach flips, and I grip the counter behind me to keep me steady.

“What do you say we get out of here?”he whispers.

“I say,hell, yeah.”

I grab the plate with sandwiches and take them into the living room.Quinn is settled on the couch, her baby bundled in her arms.

“Do you guys need anything else?If not, we’ll leave you to it,” Maverick says, packing up his stuff.

“We’ll be okay, right, Wildfire?”Quinn asks, giving her husband a dreamy look.

“You bet. We’ll try to call our doctor first thing in the morning,” Bear says as he peels his eyes away from his wife and newborn.“Thanks again, guys.I owe you big time.If either of you needs something, anything, call me, okay?”

“Will do,” Maverick replies.

“Take care and congratulations again,” I add.

Quinn and Bear hardly hear us, and I can’t blame the happy couple.Look at them.Snuggled up on the couch. If they were cartoon characters, hearts would be popping out of their eyes.

Maverick and I walk back to the truck without speaking, but we don’t have to.The air between us is so loaded with sexual tension that words aren’t needed.

“Ready?”Mavericks asks when we arrive at the car.

“I’ve been ready for over a decade.”

Chapter Five

Maverick

The drive home goes too slow for my liking, but I don’t have a choice.I can’t go any faster in this weather.I pray that no more trees will block the road because I want to get home and show Little Sloane how much she means to me.
