I don’t for a second believe he’ll let me go alone. My mouth twists and my tummy threatens to sour when he gives a low chuckle.

“You can go but you will return to me, or you will be returned to me.” He crosses his arms over his chest. “Your parents don’t deserve the trauma you’re going to visit on them, little dove should you try to leave me. None of your family will survive the hell I will visit upon them if you even try.”

Shaking my head, I look down at the glass of liquid courage knowing he’s right. “How can we be happy if you ever hurt my family or if I’m not free to leave?”

“Do you want to leave me? Really? Don’t tell me how you think you should feel because of how I brought you back into my life. Tell me how you want to leave when you take me into your body. How much you want to leave when I’m buried so deep inside you, and you don’t know where you begin and I end. Not only that, the quiet times of us just being together. When we hold one another deep into the night. There’s no way you cling to me like that and want to be free of me. You need to get real with yourself, little dove. You can’t even sleep the entire night without me.”

Springing up from the chair I almost knock it over as the wine glass hits the table spilling the deep burgundy liquid over the surface.

Hurrying to mop it up with my napkin, I turn furious eyes on him.

“We’ll see about that.” The words are like a curse.

For his part Hisashi doesn’t react just regards me with a chilling impassivity.

Attempting to walk by him I stop when his hand brushes against mine. He doesn’t grab me. His fingers idly stroke the back of my hand. I look down into an onyx abyss of glacial intensity.

“Am I going to have to kill you to keep you with me, little dove?”

Chapter

Twenty-Five

Hisashi

My dick ishard as fuck pressed against her plump soft ass when I’m awakened well past midnight. Hell it could be early morning for all I know. I shift my nose buried in the bonnet she wore to bed, and my face on the silk pillow I purchased to protect her hair.

Reluctantly I pull away from the softness of her form to answer my phone. I can’t tell who’s calling since my brother has given my number to several of the contesting parties involved in the strike since before he showed up tonight he couldn’t be reached. Bubba-T being the latest addition though I must admit of all the people I’ve had to deal with in this debacle caused by mere children, he’s been honorable. He’s proved that tonight outing the woman who’d been misleading the other employees about the concessions we were willing to make for our workers.

I’m surprised to see my brother is the person calling me. “Hai,” I answer drily. “It’s good of you to pull yourself away from your little chef to give me a call since you can’t find the time to meet with me at work.” He’s been back to work but we’ve been so swamped with various responsibilities and him leaving me to handle a lot of the accommodations the staff have demanded.

I’m sure the purpose being so we present a united front though we are the farthest we have been on an issue since I first became involved with Taylor.

“They’re torching The Camellia.” Hard words come across the line, spurring me to pull on my joggers. I barely notice Taylor shifting in the bed as I head out of the room.

“Who is they?” I ask, grabbing my keys and heading toward the garage to pick a car to drive.

“I have no idea. We are heading over there now,” he says.

“I’m on my way.” Entering the garage, striding over to my G-Wagon, I open the door getting in.

“Hisashi, you don’t have to,” he starts but I cut him off.

“It’s my honor to serve you for once, Kiyoshi-oniichan.” Hanging up I rev the engine, clicking the button to lift the underground doors.

It takesme more than twenty minutes to get to the burned-out husk of The Camellia. People are standing around looking helpless. The majority are Krie’s family the Loves. Solemn eyes watch as Krie is by her cousins Easy and Mimi. Even from the closed windows looking on I see the devastation on her face. Kiyoshi looks equally shattered as he watches her vibrating with fury at what’s been done to her. It’s then I realize just how far gone my brother is for his little chef.

I’d assumed she was an obsession that he needed to get out of his system. The first inkling I was in error should have been how he reacted to our mother’s treatment of her. I chalked it up to guilt and simply caring for his little toy. The way he took care of her during her illness himself instead of delegating it to one of his trusted staff made me think. Now there is no mistaking the love planted on his face as he watches on as she cries with anguish over the arson of her business.

Moments later her nuisance of a brother comes along with Mariah. The boy has the nerve to rail at my brother. I almost get out the car when Krie comes between them. Kiyoshi reaches for her and she snatches away from my brother. I step outside the door. His eyes meet mine and he gives a small shake of his head.

Giving him my back, I give him the respect of not witnessing the repudiation of the woman he so obviously loves.

Walking around the truck I look out to the vast darkness still able to catch the scent of honeysuckle in the air. There is so much beauty but there’s blood in the soil and poison in the soul that’s been fed by generations of animosity that brought this night to pass. It almost pains me that Kiyoshi’s little chef is a casualty. To have to stand by and watch your life’s work go up in smoke is devastating.

Just like that the answer slides into place. I send the text without even thinking so sure I don’t have to run it by my brother. The protestors, the employees spreading misinformation on the message boards. The same anonymous posters highlighting Krie’s relationship with my brother. It all led to the demise of her business.

Everything we solved at her restaurant could be jeopardized if this isn’t handled with care. Her brother didn’t help with his inane accusations.
