The wolf nearest me growled, snapping their teeth.

I twisted, pressing my back to Elias’s. Slipping a hand inside my jacket, my fingers locked around a cool, metal handle.

“What’s this?” Elias mused, his voice laced with poisoned honey. Quiet and non-aggressive, yet lethal in its deceptiveness. “The big, bad Alpha Supreme needs others to fight for him?” He chuckled, a sliver of his fury leaking into the sound.

“You think I didn’t know you were here? I could smell you and that bitch half a mile away. I’m not stupid enough to fight you one on one,” Mathis scoffed. “Elias Laskaris, Son of the Slayer of Alexandria, Heir of the Blade Magic, King of Blood Rage.” I’d never heard these titles before, but the afternoon when Bianca had told me about them having most of the Library of Alexandria in their possession came back to me. A chill skittered along my spine, raising the hairs on the back of my neck. “There is no bravery in a senseless death. A true alpha knows that.”

Of course we’d expected him to catch our scent. It was the very reason we didn’t bring an army with us. But how my mate managed to appear so unaffected by everything when this rage was suffocating me, I didn’t know.

Elias snorted. “Says the man who sentenced his son to death for not killing the woman who rejected him.” I could imagine his facial expressions when I heard the admonishment in his tone—a cocked eyebrow, a smirk on one side of his lips. “You’re weak. Pathetic. That these lemmings follow you speaks to their stupidity as much as your own. You think they can protect you?” Several wolves let out more growls, their gaping mouths salivating at the possibility of ripping us apart.

Mathis smirked. “A man is only as strong as his greatest weakness. I have none. Only a fool falls in love. But you . . .” He grinned a toothy smile. “Get them.”

Elias sprang forward, meeting wolves head-on. I pulled the gun from my jacket and gunshots rang through the air as I shot down Mathis’ followers, just like we’d talked about. They tried to separate us, but that was the plan. Elias needed to go after Mathis. To separate him. Nova took down the outliers, and I would deal with whatever wolves he’d bring.

Inside, emotions rocked me like I was trapped in a boat on a stormy sea. The violent turbulence had no mercy, increasing with each passing second. That struggle helped me point at the wolf nearest and shoot. The echo of the gun firing was thunderous. It recoiled, shaking my arm, rattling my bones.

Point. Shoot.

Point. Shoot.

Point. Sh?—

My hand cracked, wrist bending an angle. I didn’t register what had happened immediately. The shock of the impact had made me slow, but I realized I wasn’t the only one shooting.

Blood poured from a circular bullet wound in my wrist. My fingers trembled, the barrel swaying from my loosened grip.

Another clap of thunder boomed. The gun fell from my hand.

I stared at the bleeding stump where my index finger had been.

Rage thickened. Like a fog that descended, it pulled me in, wrapping its tendrils around me. The boat I’d been in capsized in the waves. The hurricane within unleashed.

I felt Nova as she ran through the forest, leaping over logs, dodging trees. Her feet carried her like she floated on the wind. I couldn’t see Elias. I’d lost Mathis. My vision was filled with fangs and fur. Claws and teeth.

Wolves leapt at me. They grabbed at my arms, my legs, any part of me they could get their maws on.

Flesh ripped clean from my bones.

My ribs cracked, then my legs gave way.

My blood scented the air, but I felt no pain.

Only rage.

It burned bright, like a beacon for my wolf. The other half of my soul.

I threw my head back and let out a howl.

If there was a god of the moon, I could have sworn they answered. Clouds rolled across the sky, blotting out all light. Nova didn’t need it to see—she could feel me. Hear me. She was me.

Her giant, lumbering form barreled through the wolves tearing at my skin. My vampire healing was incredible, but it could only heal so much when a half dozen beasts had their teeth in you.

Just as Nova would have reached me, our skins somehow collided—then merged.

I had no way to explain the sensation as her entire being went through me, into me. My bones cracked. Snapped. My skin sprouted fur. My fangs grew longer, sharper.

I was changing.
