“Is that . . .?” Adora said, squinting at Ysa and the person by her side.

“Markus,” I deadpanned. She looked at me, lip curled up in disgust and eyebrow cocked.

“But . . .why?”

“Because Ysa found a new boytoy,” I muttered.

Danni nudged me with her hip. “Because Ysa and Markus are a thing now. It suits them. She likes to be in control, and he has no desire to be.” She leveled her sister with a look, then gave me the same one. “Adora, I know you’ve seen into his soul. You know what’s in his heart, so both of you, quit being grouchy.”

“No promises,” she said, running her hands through her hair and tugging it over one shoulder.

“You’re going to make a great addition to the Portal Watch,” I commented. She’d fit right in. Confident. Headstrong. Didn’t take shit from anyone.

“Wait, what?” Danni said, her face falling as she looked at her sister. I glanced at Adora, not realizing she hadn’t shared that with her. “What’s he talking about?”

Adora glared at me in a flat expression but turned to Danni to answer. “I asked Elias to reach out and look into the Portal Watch. I want to go there, and they’ve accepted me. I wasn’t going to tell you until I knew for sure I could go, and we just found out, but I wanted to tell you after this trip. Didn’t want to ruin the holiday.”

Danni’s mouth fell open slightly. “Why?”

Adora sighed. “You’re safe now. Mom and Abbey are safe. I want to know what’s out there for me. I want to know if I’m the last peacock shifter. Guarding and accessing the portals will allow that. I feel it,” she said, putting her hand on her chest. “Something out there is calling me.” She lifted a shoulder, then added, “Besides, you and Elias are trying to make a baby every chance you get. I don’t need to be around for that. My delicate ears have already been traumatized.”

Danni smiled, and it reached her eyes. “Even if you aren’t the only one, there are none out there like you.”

“I know,” she said, grinning. “I’m not leaving until after we get back to Mt. Rainier, okay? And the moment I know I have a niece or nephew, there is nothing on this earth that would stop me from coming back to you.”

Danni wrapped her arms around Adora, and they hugged each other tightly. “You bet your ass you will.”

When they let go, Adora stepped back, smoothing out her dress. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go check on our mothers and see what stories have been told so far. Let’s hope they don’t share all of it in front of Ysa and Markus. I don’t need anyone at Portal Watch hearing about the time we plucked my feathers and glued them to you when you still hadn’t shifted. Not exactly queen-like for you, nor does it give me the intimidating card to play with the other guards.”

I snorted, trying to imagine Adora’s midnight-black peacock feathers plastered to Danni’s body.

Danni looked horrified. “Go. Stop them before they start making whiskey.”

Adora cackled, leaving us on the balcony by ourselves.

I walked up to Danni, slipping my arms around her waist, pulling her close to me. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that she’d asked me about the Watch. It was in confidence.”

She covered my arms with her own, then patted me. “I know. She has her reasons. I could sense something was going on. She came to you with those questions because she trusts you. That’s a big step for her.”

“You’re incredible. Do you know that?” I kissed her neck once. Twice. Danni tilted her head, giving me more access. “Understanding. Kind.”

She hummed. “Go on.”

“Empathetic. Generous.” I planted little kisses down her throat. “You’ll be an amazing mother.”

“My sister did say she would come home as soon as she knew there was a niece or nephew waiting for her . . .” She trailed off, raising an eyebrow and glancing at me from the corner of her eye.

“She did,” I murmured, grazing my lips over her collarbone.

“Then let’s get on that,” she whispered with a seductive smile on her face.

I was more than willing to give my queen whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted. She turned in my arms, pressing her body against my chest. Her fingers laced through my hair, and she pulled me to her as a growl rumbled in my chest.

“My pleasure.”

The end.
