“They’re coming sooner than I expected.” He gritted his teeth and released his hold.

The coolness of his hands left me, and a deep ache settled within, missing the thrum of his touch.

“Meet me at the bottom of the stairs in the morning after breakfast.” He brushed the back of his hand against my cheek. “I have a place we can use.”

My eyes closed, and I focused on his touch and murmured, “But what about the trial?”

“They give us a respite in between so we can recuperate. The next trial won’t be for a few more days.”

That would’ve been nice to know before now. I kept coming in blind, whereas everyone else was aware of the rules.

“Rest.” He inched away. “You need it after your day. Sweet dreams, mo fhlùr.”

The edges of darkness surrounded him, and I didn’t want him to go, but there was one more thing I needed to know before he vanished. “What does that m?—?”

Before I could finish, he’d disappeared, and Moire and another contestant laughed loudly from the top of the stairs.

I didn’t want them to see me. I pivoted and hurried into my room, but when I turned to close the door, I noticed the door across and one over from mine was wedged open. My gaze landed on Curry, who had clearly been listening to my entire conversation with Kieran.

I wanted to be embarrassed, but that wouldn’t do any good. I had no clue how long he’d been there, but I saw a dark circle around his eye. He hadn’t had it when we’d left the arena.

How strange.

Not wanting to worry about anything else, I shut the door and locked it. I leaned my back against the door and breathed shallowly.

One thing was certain.

King Kieran of the Winter Court would be the death of me.
