“If she wasn’t here, you would go in there without a single thought for those witches.”

Raiden let out a low growl. “It has nothing to do with her.”

“That’s what you said about the last mortal, then she cut our sister’s head off and became one of us.”

“Elle isn’t like Freya.”

“You always did let your heart rule your head. Should another of your siblings pay the price for it?”

“This isn’t like that. Freya and I were in love. I’m not now, and even if I were, I wouldn’t do that again.”

I snapped. “Enough!” I closed my eyes for a second, feeling rage bubble below the surface. “I helped you get out!” I shouted at Aziel, whose eyebrows shot up his forehead. “I am not Raiden’s lover or anything like Freya, so you can stop thinking I somehow have any influence over him. All I care about is getting my family out of there, alive. You can have Freya and take her head for all I care, but I will not stand here and be compared to the same woman who’s holding the people I love captive. Now, I am going in there with you, whether you like it or not. I will not slow you down. In fact, seeing me just might be enough to make her hesitate if she thinks I have her stupid keys.”

Raiden’s expression darkened. “Aziel, keep her here.”

I gritted my teeth. “What? No. You can’t just keep me here.”

“Don’t let her out of your sight.”

Aziel shook his head. “Fine, but when you call for me, she’s on her own.”

Aziel paced as we waited for Raiden or Thalia to send a signal or call for him. It had been minutes.

“What if something’s happened?” I asked for the third time. “I should go check.”

“I’m not letting you go in there.”

I placed a hand on my hip. “You can’t just hold me here like a prisoner. Besides, why do you care what happens to me? Just because Raiden told you to keep me here…”

His expression changed. “Raiden doesn’t just protect anyone. I don’t want to deal with his temper if I let you go in and something happens to you.”

“He doesn’t care.”

He laughed. “You mortals are so blind.”

“Hey.”

“Look, mortal.”

“It’s Elle.”

He shrugged. “He kept you warm, swore to help you find your sister, took you to a hotel room, and is now protecting your life. You both may not see it, but I do, and I don’t care for it, but he’s my brother, so.”

“You’re wrong. He did all of that for his own gain.”

“Think what you want.” He resumed his pacing. “I need silence now.”

“I need it too,” I grumbled, then leaned back against one of the gargoyle statues. He was more difficult than his brother, which was an accomplishment.

Finally, after another minute, he relented. “I’m going in. Something’s not right. Stay here.” With lightning speed, he rushed through the gates and into the front door, knocking it off its hinges.

I was about to run in behind him when something caught me around my waist. I turned, and a hand clapped over my mouth, muffling my next scream. It was Alexander, sporting a scar where I’d shot him, and a scornful look to go with it.

“You’re coming with me.”

I kicked and punched, but he was stronger. I wished I had my dagger. I finally managed to get my foot high enough to aim for the balls. When I muscled a kick, he staggered back, clutching his prized jewels. I sucked in a deep breath, then turned on my heel and ran right into Freya.

“Well, well.” She laughed. “I was wondering when he’d leave you. Naturally, Raiden would keep his new mortal pet under protection.”
