I jumped when someone knocked on the door.

“Uh, Raiden?” Edmund asked.

He pressed his fingers against his mouth, a smirk playing on those perfect lips. Slowly, he peeled my pants and underwear down. Edmund knocked again.

“I locked the door,” Raiden whispered, grinning.

Edmund’s footsteps creaked away and down the hall. I let out a tense breath. “That was close. We could have been caught.”

“I don’t care,” he said, running his thumb along my bottom lip. “It’s just me and you right now. The world could be on fire, and I’d still have you.”

My breath hitched. He pushed his cock between my thighs, teasing me with just the tip. I spread myself, rocking my hips forward, and pushed him deep.

Something jolted beneath us, then cracked, but I didn’t care. I moaned loudly as he groaned. I wrapped my legs around him, my eyes rolling back as want coursed through me. He kissed his way up to my neck.

He whispered my name against my skin. “Elle.”

I closed my eyes as I tipped over the edge. My thighs quivered as he came inside me. Gripping my nails into his back, I pressed my lips against his shoulder, groaning loudly. He rested on top of me, rocking his hips as beads of sweat collected on his forehead. He pressed it against mine.

I expected him to move from me, but instead, he ran his finger down my cheek and brushed his lips against mine, closing his eyes. The gentle kiss lingered as he pulled away. For a moment, he looked different, like he had before: carefree.

It was morning when I awoke, tangled in sheets and nestled in his arms. He looked so peaceful in his sleep. I didn’t want to wake him. When I moved, the bed creaked, and I realized what the crack had been last night. We’d broken the bed. Edmund was going to kill me. They all must have heard it. It wasn’t in Raiden’s nature to be quiet. My old self would have worried, got up, and tried to explain, but I didn’t care as much anymore. Raiden moved in his sleep, and I settled back, closing my eyes. I found peace in the silence because I knew it wouldn’t last long. He didn’t need to tell me; I already knew. Between the vengeance with Freya, the grief from his sister, and the fear of Lucius hurting me, this couldn’t happen again.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Maddox was grinning far too widely for first thing in the morning. “Morning, sunshine.”

I side-eyed him as I went to grab coffee for me and Raiden. “Morning,” I said carefully. I didn’t know how much he’d heard.

“I would ask how your night went, but it sounded like it was pretty good.”

I sighed, closing my eyes. “Did Edmund?—”

“Oh, yes,” Maddox said, leaning back in his chair at the oak dining table. “We were all here for the show. You were hardly quiet. It was super awkward.” He laughed. “Anyway, you missed a bunch while you were off having wild god sex. How was it, by the way?”

I couldn’t help but grin. “Unbelievable.”

He clasped his fingers together at the back of his head. “Oh, I bet.”

“So what did I miss?”

“Well.” He drummed his fingers against the wood. “Aziel came back, all brooding and angry. Naomi talked him down from interrupting you and Raiden, so you can thank her.”

My eyebrow arched. “She did?”

He smirked. “I think he likes her, which is totally unfair because you might both end up being able to have gods.”

I laughed. “Did Aziel say anything?”

“About who, Freya?” Our conversation darkened. “Only that he thinks she wanted them to find her, and you. It was like she set a trap.”

“It makes no sense.”

“It does.” He looked at me incredulously. “God, girl, you are blind. She needed to make sure. It’s why she kidnapped you, and why she tried to hurt you. She wanted to see what he would do, to see how valuable you are.”

I trembled while pouring my coffee. “I’m not valuable.”

“She can use you against Raiden.”
