Empty.

Barren drawers left partially hanging open, and a window cracked, not fully shut.

If I had a true heart, it would have stopped.

A soldier came bursting through the door, a look of fear on his face. He shook his head, jutting a thumb over his shoulder. “Two vehicles left earlier.”

I screamed in anger, punching a hole into the concrete walls.

“Which ones?” Ysa asked. “When?”

“Ysa’s truck. Your Jeep.” The young guard cringed as he said it. “The guard on post said Dannika was going for a night climb. She left just before twelve twenty. Markus claimed she forgot some gear, and he was bringing it to her. That was ten minutes after.”

“Did anyone follow them?” Ysa yelled, but the guard shook his head.

“Bring me a witch,” I growled. Every inch of me struggled to remain in control. I wanted to kill him. He was going to hurt her, and I had to stop him before he could.

“Elias, we don’t know where she actually is,” Ysa started.

“Then bring me Seraphina. NOW,” I shouted, and true to Ysa’s form, she didn’t even flinch. She looked at the soldier and jerked her head toward the exit.

“You heard him. Go,” she barked.

Gripping the splintered frame of the door, I gritted my teeth.

“We’ll find her,” she said, trying to soothe me. I shot her a look. I didn’t want to be coddled. I wanted to find my mate.

That was what she was. I had no question. She did temper my rage. She complemented me in ways I hadn’t known were possible. No part of my life or my future made sense without her.

Seraphina teleported into the room, one of her many gifts, and one I was thankful for in the moment. “You’ve summoned me? Quite aggressively, so it would seem.” She looked me up and down, considering my stance and seething anger.

“Take me to Dannika.” The way I spoke made my demands clear. I wasn’t asking.

Her brows furrowed. “Very well. Where is she?”

For what may have been the first time in my life, I acknowledged how completely and utterly lost I was, entirely unsure of which direction to take. My mind spun in circles, searching for answers, but there were none. I had no idea.

Ysa stepped forward when I didn’t speak. “We don’t know. She’s disappeared, and so has Markus.” When Seraphina raised her eyebrows, Ysa added, “She’s in danger.”

Her features softened. “I can’t take you to a place I don’t know.”

“A portal, then.” I leveled her with my gaze, hard and unrelenting.

“The magic isn’t precise, nor is it stable for long. I don’t know where you’ll end up, or what you’ll be entering. Do you understand?” she asked, pinning me with an intense glare in return. I nodded. I didn’t care if I walked into fire. “I’ll need blood sacrifice?—”

“Done.”

She twisted her lips. “And a flesh sacrifice. Your eye, my king.” I raised an eyebrow, glancing at Ysa before returning my attention to Seraphina again. “For a portal to be created to a place unknown, the magic must see for you. An eye to see, your blood to power, and an item of hers so the spell may find her.”

“Ysa,” I said, not taking my gaze from the witch. “Bring Kieran. I’ll need both of you to assist me.” She snapped her fingers to a soldier at the door, and he disappeared.

Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out the leather pouch filled with animal crackers, dropping it into Seraphina’s extended palm. “She gave me what’s inside, but the bag is hers. Will that work?”

She pressed her lips together, dipping her chin. “We shall see.”

“How long? We’ve already wasted enough time.” No one knew where they were. No one knew if Danni was safe or if Markus had already hurt her. No one knew anything.

Except me. I knew I’d fucked up.
