The vehicle took off. With no windows, she couldn’t even take in her surroundings, but she could feel that they were moving. She knew freaking out wouldn’t help the situation. The man still watched her, and so she asked the question again. “Where are we headed?”

“Out and about.” He leaned back in his seat. “Now, tell me, why do you want to join the D’Narvius group?”

It was agang, but whatever. And she hadn’t offered or asked to join, but wanted the location of her brother, dammit. But she could play along.

She gulped and realized the man’s question was a good thing. Being kidnapped was less than ideal, but the question meant they still believed part of her story. They still believed that she had a crew and performed illegal acts similar to their own.

So, Gianna took a deep breath and struggled to harden herself. She needed to keep that calm, calculated exterior she had been using for a few days now.

“My brother works for you.” She gave the man a tight smile. “We used to work together on Earth. We did really well down there, but we decided to expand. He left first to get his bearings before I arrived. He spoke highly of you guys.”

The man watched her, taking her words in. She hoped she made herself sound good, but she wasn’t sure. The man gave her no indication that he was believing her.

“You told my guys his name is Gabe?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“We don’t have a Gabe.”

That was a load of shit, and she knew he lied, but she didn’t want to let on, so she just smiled. She placed her hands on her knees, knowing every encounter they had was short. She only had so much time to get what she wanted.

“Let’s stop fucking around and be up front about whatever this is. I know how this works. I’ve done it for a while.” The biggest lie she’d ever told. “I want in, and my brother spoke highly of you. Whether he used his name or not doesn’t matter. I want in, so what do I need to do to prove that?”

The man sat forward and narrowed his eyes slightly, taking in her words. She kept her blank expression but her stomach clenched. She just might vomit all over this man if he didn’t say something soon.

“If you want in, you will need to pass the initiation.” He leaned back into his cushion, giving her an almost humorous smile. “No one is hired into this organization until they pass it. It’s a rule. Maybe you will find your brother after.”

She bit hard onto her cheek. Shit. A twist in her road. Not what she needed. But she couldn’t show she was upset. She was getting closer to finding her brother, and that’s what mattered.

“Fine,” she said. “Whatever it takes.”

She wanted to tell Kozien. She knew he was probably freaking out about them being separated, and she wanted to let him know she was okay.

But it seemed as soon as she thought this, the man noticed the cheap comm Kozien had snapped onto her wrist. She internally groaned as she knew exactly what he was going to say.

“I’ll need that,” he said, pointing toward it. “No contact with the outside world until the initiation is over.”

Fuck. Fuck!Fuck!

Fine.

She unclipped the comm and handed it over, internally flipping the man off. She would just somehow inform Kozien another way.

The shuttle landed, and the door swung open. She looked out into a large brick building. She saw no windows, no plants, nothing but brick walls, and a single wood door.

Gianna swallowed as the man got out and waited for her. She didn’t fight. She had agreed to this, but now her insides twisted.

She walked into the building, which had the look of a business. They walked down a long corridor, and the man unlocked a door. He swung the door open to a dark room and waved her inside.

Gianna tried to hold her head high as she stepped inside. She wasn’t prepared for the door to shut and lock behind her. The lights flicked on, engulfing the room in an ugly yellow.

She clutched her hands tightly together and surveyed the room. It was small with white marble floors and white panel walls and held nothing but a single cot and another door. She walked toward the door and opened it to a bathroom. White floors and white walls with nothing but a sink, a toilet, and a stand-up shower. Not even a curtain.

Gianna steadied her quickly beating heart and seated herself on the cot. She would have to make the best of this. This was for her brother.

“For Gabe,” she said, reminding herself. This was all for her brother.

She stared at the door and decided to wait. She had all the time in the world now.
