He regarded her for a long moment, taking in her serious attitude despite the smile on her face. He knew that Gianna was resourceful and could take care of herself if it came down to it. But the thought of her roaming the streets of Lorr without him there to protect her made him anxious.

He had to trust her, though. It was the only way any of them were going to come out of this alive.

“I’ll have you wear a bug in your ear. That way I can direct you toward the bank and through the process to withdraw the funds from my accounts. Since you’ll be going in as servants, we can get you into my safety deposit box.”

Gianna nodded. “Perfect. Gabe, you good with that?”

“It’s better than being forced to be a contraband mule.”

“All right.” Gianna smacked her fist into her hand. “Let’s go.”

Chapter 20

Findingroyalservantswasn’thard, surprisingly.

Once they’d gotten a description of their uniforms, it was clear to see that many of them were roaming around the streets of Lorr. Gianna had a feeling that most of them were on the move doing tasks for whatever royal they served. Their busy-bee-like strides were easy to spot among the commoners.

She and Gabe left the two servants they’d robbed by one of the trash depositories that sat behind the back end of every building and adjusted their uniforms before getting back onto the main street.

Gianna pressed the bug in her ear, activating it. “Kozien?”

“Hey,” came his sultry voice. It sent a shiver up her spine, having it so close in her ear like that.

“We’re on the main street.”

“All right, you’re going to head two hundred yards up until you see a fork in the street. Take the right.”

She nodded. “Got it.”

Bumping into her brother’s shoulder, she led them down the main street of Lorr.

The city was gorgeous, filled with bustling streets and people heading to and from whatever businesses lined either side of the road. It wasn’t as crowded as Noxxa’s city was but still had all of the energy of it.

She could see why Kozien had hesitated to leave. She was sure if it wasn’t for his father and the mounting obligations of being a prince, he probably would’ve stayed.

When they came to the fork in the road, Gianna bumped her brother’s shoulder again, guiding him over to the right side and heading up that street.

She pressed her bug again. “We’re up the road now.”

“You should see the bank up ahead in a few hundred feet. Giant building with pillars outside. You can’t miss it.”

Sure enough, Kozien’s bank appeared once they cleared the hill.

It was massive, even from far away. The building stood hundreds of feet tall with steps leading into it. Giant flags flew on each corner that she could only assume displayed the royal coat of arms.

She steeled her shoulders and started up the steps. She spotted a few guards on either side of the entrance, eyeing everyone who came in and out of the building.

She pressed the bug. “Do we go in and ask?”

“No,” Kozien’s voice crackled in her ear. “You’ll head toward the elevator. That’ll take you down to the safety deposit boxes below.”

Both she and Gabe walked straight past the guards, her heart pounding inside her chest. The threat of getting caught and having her brother hauled away to Umbrosis again was making her palms sweaty.

The inside of the bank seemed even bigger than the outside.

Dark green marbled floors ran across the expanse of the entire lobby. Desks lined the entire way up to the back of the building, all with various people sitting at them chatting in a low hum to the bankers on the other side.

Gianna looked around, spotting the elevators a bit away from them.
