"Nothing!" I storm over to the nurse's station, slamming my hand on the bench. "Someone tell me what's happening!!! Take me back there right now!"

"Sir, you need to calm down."

"If one more person tells me to calm down, I'm going to burn down this whole hospital and take everyone down with it. Tell me where she is!"

She comes around the bench, hands on her hips. "What is your relationship with the patient? Are you family?"

Are they fucking kidding me?"Yes! I'm her family, dammit! I'm her... I'm her... fiancé, okay!" I pull the jewelry box out of my pocket, my hands staining it with her blood. "Now let me back there!"

The nurse hesitates, and then sighs.

"Okay, sir, I promise I'll have the doctor come out as soon as he knows anything. Why don't you fill out this form while you wait. Please. The best thing you can do for her is to let them do their job."

She hands me a clipboard. Her hand accidentally brushes against mine when she does. I snap my hand back, and then give her an apologetic look.

It's not personal.

It's just… the only person's touch I want right now, ever again is Luna's.

"Come on, Kingsley, sit down," Matthias says, pushing me into a seat in the waiting room.

The pen on the clipboard shakes in my hand and My-Linh takes it from me and hands it to Damien. "Tell Damien what to write. I'd do it but my handwriting is atrocious."

"That's true," Clarissa says with a forced smile. "She sent me a birthday card and it read like a death threat."

I wince at the word "death," and all I can remember is the sound of her moaning as I carried her in my arms, limp and lifeless, leaving a trail of blood on the sidewalk as I carried her into the hospital.

I look over now, and it's still there. Why is it still there?

Drops of blood leading from the door to where they'd pulled the stretcher out and took her away from me.

Smeared by strangers' footsteps.

No.No.

I get up from my seat and walk over to the blood trail and drop to the floor. I pull my suit jacket off and lay it over the blood-stained floor, trying to mop it up. Just a few weeks ago I had walked the hallways of this very hospital, the sound of her laugh echoing around me, bringing nothing but happiness and cheer to everyone around her.

To me.

I hadn't realized how I had lived a life on autopilot until she came along.

How I thought I was content, that I knew what my life was supposed to be about, dedicated to.

But really all along, I was just waiting for her.

And now if she's not in it, there's nothing left for me.

I crawl along the floor, dragging the jacket all along the way, sopping up the crimson trail, not being able to bear the thought of anyone walking over it.Not her blood.

"Hey, Kingsley... let the hospital staff do that. "

"No! I... I can't... I have to."

My-Linh kneels on the floor next to me, gently pulling the jacket from me. "I've got it from here. I promise, I won't leave a single drop, okay? Just... sit there and rest. She's going to need you to be strong for her when she gets out of this."

I stare at my sister-in-law with watery eyes. "She thought... she thought I wasn't coming. She thought I'd stood her up."

My-Linh shakes her head, her eyes sad. "No, she knew you'd be there. She'll understand when you explain that you had some last minute work to catch up on. She knows how important Baxter Enterprises is to you. She knew you were coming."
