Kingsley

The door doesn't even have a chance to close fully behind me when I hear it open again and little footsteps chase after me down the hallway.

“Um, excuse me, where do you think you’re going?”

I spin around, and Luna is standing there, hands on her hips. Looking every bit the five-foot-nothing imp staring down the Baked Potato that I saw a few months ago.

“I don’t know.”

“Well, then, I don’t know if you know this, but you’re kind of needed in another room right now.”

“Yes.About that.”

“What about that?”

I grab my hair and let out a grunt. “Ugh… um. You know, argh! Damn!”

Her eyes follow me as I pace back and forth in the hallway.

“Kingsley, honey, those aren’t actual words. I thought you were getting better at the talking thing.”

“I just don’t know if this CEO thing is the right thing for me.”

She blinks. “Why?”

“I… don’ t know. What if…? What if something about work happens that comes between us again?”

“Then we talk about it.”

“But what if we don’t…?”

She grabs my arms with both of her hands around my bicep and spins me around to face her. “How about we just… do? I know, we’ve had problems in the past but I think a lot of that, honestly, had to do with you being a complete and total butthead. And me not knowing how to handle the butthead part of you. I do now. I tell you to sit down, and make your butthead self open up and talk to me. And that’s how we deal with it.”

I look down at her, her sweet, determined face, staring up at me, unblinking. “That’s it?”

“Literally, yes.”

I frown. “Why didn’t we do that before?”

“I told you. Buttheadiness.”

I scrunch up my nose, gently laying a hand on the back of her neck, feeling her warmth under my palm to calm me. “Well, you’re a butthead, too.”

“I’m sorry??”

“Just saying, you and the whole article thing…”

She waves my words away. “Fine. Neither of us will go off and make stupid decisions that affect the both of us without talking to each other first in some misguided attempt to be protecting the other, okay? Joint butthead retirement.”

I nod. “Fine.”

“Good. Ready?” She grabs my hand, dragging me back to the boardroom.

I stop. “Luna?”

“Yes, Kingsley?”
