I point at my own face. “Does it look like I knew?”

“Who the hell can tell? You have a poker face that only Kiara can beat,” he adds, which isn’t the insult it sounds like. Kiara, his fiancée, who runs her own prop poker player business, really does have the best poker face I’ve ever seen.

“What’s she like?”

“Er…

Smart. Funny. Sexy. Infuriating. Sharp. Inquisitive. Kind. Mesmerizing. Charming. Warm.Damn near making me lose my fucking mind irresistible.

“She’s okay, I guess. I don’t know. Well, you guys met her, kind of.” I inwardly blanch. They’re going to go crazy when I give them the next piece of information. “She’s the girl from the bar. The one who stood up to the Baked Potato.”

“Oh, holy shit, he’s fucked.” Matthias snorts, leaning back, folding his arms with a smirk on his face.

“What? Why?”

Damien swallows a smile and says, “Kingsley, you have this protective instinct thing that you can’t control, and now you’ve finally met your damsel in distress.”

Can you disown your own brothers? Because I am seriously thinking about looking into that. “Look, trust me, she’s not in any distress. Distressed women don’t…”

Kylian raises his eyebrows, pressing me further. “Don’t what…?

I burst, finally among people I can vent to. “Talk as much as she does! She does not shut up! Talks all day long. Teasing me and making jokes. All day long. Telling me about her day, asking me about my day. Tellingmewhat she’s thinking about whatIthink aboutmyday. Talking to every fucking person in the office and coming back and telling me about all the things she’d learned about them. Morning, noon, and bloody night. Talks to Marcus. Talks to Theodore. Tells me what she talked to them about. Makes me laugh at her lame jokes. Begs me to teach her how to make bread and then doesn’t listen and just talks the whole time… it nevereverends.”

Kylian snorts. “Yeah, he’s a goner.”

“Fuck you all. I’m just doing it as a favor to Ernest. He wanted me to do this for some reason. So I’m helping out. That’s all.”

Matthias shakes his head and sighs. “I never thought we’d see the day we’d have Missus Big Brother.”

“That’s not happening. She’s twenty-five and I’m forty-one!”

Silence.

“And?” Kylian shrugs.

And the last thing I hear before I hang up the call is my brothers singing the wedding march.

I’m going to kill them.

All of them.

And then just hire some other dumb-looking idiots to stand in their place.

She is Ernest’s daughter.

She is fifteen years younger than you.

She is trusting you to protect her and her future.

She deserves so much more than what you can give her.

Luna

We come to the end of the second week so quickly that when I pull the top page off the desk calendar, I feel a little thrill that I’ve been able to keep up with him for this long.
