“I saw what I saw, Kingsley. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t.”

Fists ball at his sides. The only evidence that he doesn’t have full control over this moment. “Then maybe what we should really be teaching you is that you can’t be trusted to know what you’re looking at.”

“It looked pretty cut and dry to me.”

He spins and starts his way down the hall, and I turn back to the table, anger seeping through my body, thawing out his icicles.

But before I know it, my chair is pulled back and he yanks me to my feet before pinning me against the table. His arms brace on either side of me, his face so close to mine, his eyes are almost blurry in my vision.

Almost.

He grabs my chin, keeping my eyes anchored on his until those brilliant blue gems come into focus.

Every tiny microcosm in his irises seething, swirling with an unrepressed fury.

“I don’t fuck around, Luna.” The words hang, dark and dangerous, in the air between us. “I don’t fuck around, and I certainly don’t fuck around with multiple women at the same time, and without them knowing it.” He gives my chin an extra squeeze. “You got that?”

I can’t barely process what he’s saying. I’m drowning in his closeness. “Kingsley…”

He’s never been so bursting with life as he is in this moment.

Brimming with a sparking volatility that is threatening to burn me in its wake.

And I want him to catch fire with me.

I want him to kiss me until there is nothing but ashes left as evidence that we were ever here.

“So, apologize to me,” he hisses.

“I’m…” The word sticks to my tongue.

“Apologize for thinking that I’m the kind of man who would do that, Luna.”

I shake my head, tears threatening to fall and extinguish the heat blazing between us. “How am I supposed to know that? I don’t know anything about you! You won’t tell me anything!”

A trapped flame flickers in his pupils, licking dangerously close at the edges.

Perfectly compartmentalized, controlled Kingsley Baxter, a single, soft exhale away from losing it all.

“So, listen now,” he growls. “If I’m ever fucking a woman, there’s only her and no one else. Now you know one thing about me. And don’t you ever dare fucking forget it.”

His grip tightens, and for a second, for one torturous, searing moment, it feels like he’s about to lean in to close that final gap between us.

But then he releases me completely.

Pulling back from the table, he turns to face the hallway wall, his voice almost inaudible when he says, “Go. Now. And Luna, if you hear me knock on your door tonight, don’t answer.”

Twenty

Kingsley

She’s my hell on earth.

Temptress and damnation in one.

A siren from the depths of the seas, calling for my destruction against the jagged rocks.

From the moment I saw her at the bar a month ago, a tiny slip of a human standing up against the walking spud, she’s been nothing but testing me. Teasing me with nothing but a smile and a flash of skin under a mini denim skirt, she’s been the only thing I’ve wanted and the only thing I’ve denied myself.
