He winks. "Exactly."

I sit up as he walks around the bed, placing the mug on the nightstand and the plate in my lap. He walks back out, to get his own plate I'm sure, and I cut into my pancake. I can see blueberries in it, and knowing I did not have blueberries, or bacon, come to think of it, in my refrigerator, he must have gone to the store sometime this morning. All for me.

Maybe there is something there. Maybe it's not all in my mind. Maybe he truly is where he wants to be. With me.

I swallow at the rising hope in me, knowing I should squish it, but finding I'm unable to. He comes back into the room, and I hurry to take my first bite, giving myself something to do other than stare at him as he situates himself beside me.

I gasp. "I can taste."

"See? Dr. Jackson to the rescue. You're welcome."

"Oh, I see." I chuckle. "It's all because of you."

"Look, I'm not saying it’s because I'm here, but I'm just pointing out that you looked like you were knocking on death's door when I arrived, and this morning, you're a ray of sunshine, who can taste."

"My, my. So humble. I'll go ahead and say maybe, maybeit's your cooking."

He grins. "I will accept that. Well, how is it?"

"Freaking amazing."

He does a little dance beside me, and I laugh so hard I almost choke on my food. This all feels... dangerously normal and good. Even more so when he picks up the remote again, turning to a show, smiling at me when he catches me staring.

“What?” he asks.

“Just…”

No, don’t you dare fucking say it.My mind hisses at me.Don’t you dare say this feels like a moment between something more than people who fuck. It feels like it’s between lovers, people in a relationship, people who care for each other. Don’t even think about uttering that you want to have it again and again with him.I take my own advice.

“I was just wondering which romantic comedy you’re going to pick this time,” I lie. And God, the lie tastes like ashes on my tongue and stabs like a dagger into my heart.

He gives a shocked laugh. “Are you making fun of my movie choosing skills?”

"It was just an... unexpected choice."

"I'll have you know How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is one of my all-time favorite movies."

"Oh, really? What are some others?"

I shouldn't be asking this. I shouldn't care. I shouldn't be telling myself to make sure that I memorize what his next words will be.

"Let's see. I love What Happens in Vegas, Bride Wars, Mr. and Mrs. Smith..."

"I'm sensing a real theme here." I arch a brow.

He chuckles. "You've caught me."

"We should have put that question in our truth or dare game."

He smiles. "Ah, what started all of this."

All of this. I have to blow out a quiet, deep breath at just whatall of thishas become to me.

"And this, this is my favorite show," he says.

I look toward the TV and see he's put on Chopped.

I bark out a laugh. "Seriously?"
