"I will tell you that Law definitely likes what it actually turns me into."

"Eww, don't say it." I fake gag. "I'm trying to eat here."

"Is there anything else you need for the baby shower?" Sophie asks.

We'd finished picking out the decorations before we came here for dinner. Lexa is so excited to be planning it. It's her first official job since graduating. We all knew she'd do a great job, just like she had with my party, but I can tell she's nervous as hell.

"Just you showing up," she answers Sophie. "Though, why in the world you want it to be co-ed is beyond me."

"Because Law invited all those stuck-up women from the hospital boards, so I told him I will not suffer them alone. He's all that stands between me and them."

"Are they still giving him a hard time?"

"I guess he expects it with all the changes he's making at the hospital, but, yeah. So he wants to show them a more, as he put it,family oriented side, like what they felt his father brought. Since, as they keep reminding him, having a child without being marriedis not quite the image they want."

I gasp. "They did not say that."

"Different words, but same meaning."

"What assholes," Lexa adds. "Why do they think it's even any of their business?"

"Don't ask me." Sophie shrugs.

"I'm pretty sure he won't be unmarried for too much longer anyway," Lexa says.

Sophie rolls her eyes. "There you go being miss romantic again, when you like to pretend your heart is ice cold."

"It is, but for myself. Not for you guys getting those happily ever afters. I'm all for that."

"If you ask me, you'll end up having a double happily ever after," I joke.

"Double the cock." She laughs. "That's about it."

"Oh good Lord," the woman behind us exclaims.

"I think it's time to go before we get kicked out." I shake my head.

We end up leaving fifteen minutes later, luckily of our own accord, and each head home. I pull up in front of my house, not able to help the way my eyes drift to the mirror, looking for someone I'm sure I won't find. I wish I could text Jackson to ask him how much longer… If he's still planning what to do, or if I'm close to finding out if his words are true. If all the dreams and nights spent moaning his name as I worked myself have been worth it.

Sighing, I get out of the car and walk up the stone pathway to my front door. Unlocking it, I glance left and right, giving my street one last look before going inside. I put my keys and phone onto the table as I close the door, then bend over to take off my heels. As soon as I straighten, all at once, I feel a presence at my back and a hand clamp over my mouth.

My eyes widen as a breath builds in my lungs to scream as loud as possible. The hand tightens as I'm pulled even closer to the body behind me.

"Don't. Make. A sound."

Chapter 3

Fear. Utter and complete fear overtakes me. My body feels frozen, only my eyes moving, searching in the darkness for anything to hit the man behind me with. The lamp on the table is too far. Maybe if I can reach my keys on the table...

"Don't even fucking think about it," he growls. "You try to run, and I will make you pay for it."

"Please," I plead.

"No amount of begging is gonna help you now, you little slut."

My chest begins heaving with my heavy, short breaths, a cry building in my throat. I have to get away from him. I have to fight.

But then, with those heavy breaths comes the scent, the sandalwood smell. Realization hits… that scent I told Jackson to wear. The voice, even if the words he’s saying are growled, is familiar to me. It has been in my dreams so many times. And now he's here to bring those dreams to life. But I won't make this easy on him. Fear has now receded, just a little, enough to allow desire to come through. To make me desperate to see what he'll do next, say next. To let go of having any control right now. He wants that control, but I won't just hand it over. He'll have to take it.
