“If that’s true, why do you have eyes on you right now?”

I stared at him fearfully.

“What do you mean?”

“Two cars,” he bit out. “One on each end of the street. You can see them both from here. There are two men sitting in each car. Why would they be idling on your street, Celine?”

“Maybe they are cops,” I ventured.

“Have the cops offered you protection?”

I shook my head.

“Those are Monani’s men, Celine,” he insisted.

I craned my neck and saw the cars he mentioned. Two BMWs, with two guys sitting in there reading newspapers. Shit! It looked as if the chapter wasn’t closed after all.

“I’m calling the cops,” I replied furiously.

“Or you could just go about your life in your usual way,” he suggested.

“What do you mean?”

“If you decide to fight Monani, you need to be prepared for payback. He will harass you to the end of your life. Instead, allow him to see that you’re not hiding his sister in your house. Go to work, and take Rose to daycare. Live your life. He won’t dare to approach you directly now that you’ve threatened to file charges against him, because he doesn’t need the added aggravation right now.”

I stared at him in surprise.

“Do you think it’s as easy as that? I can’t risk Rose’s safety,” I explained.

I didn’t like the smile that spread across his face slowly. It was smug. Triumphant. And it scared the hell out of me.

“That’s where I come in.”

I knew I wasn’t going to like this.

“Explain. And wipe that smug smile off your face before I smack it off,” I snapped.

The smile on Marcus’s face grew even wider.

“I’m moving in with you.”

I moved Rose to the other hip and glared up at him.

“Over my dead body,” I declared.

“You don’t have a choice, Celine. Either you let me help you, or I’m going to kidnap the two of you and lock you up in my bedroom if I have to. I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe,” he said, leaning over me menacingly.

My gaze dipped to his lips and I drew in a sharp breath at the idea of being locked up in his bedroom, but then I remembered that he only wanted to keep me safe. This wasn’t personal. It wasn’t about me. It was about Saint Marcus and his guilt.

All the same, it did make sense to have him in my house for a few days. It would tell Arjun Monani that I wasn’t the helpless single mother he’d tried to intimidate. I had Marcus Donovan at my back, and that was something.

“So, you plan to be my giant, grumpy guard dog?” I asked nastily because of course, I wasn’t going to make it easy for him. “For how long?”

If Marcus thought he was going to have his way in everything, he had another think coming.

“For as long as it takes,” he replied firmly.

“And will your family be okay with this? Your girlfriend?”
