“You coming, Ali?” Marley asks, but I shake my head, trying to come up with a lie so I can meet Hunter in a few minutes.

“I gotta grab a few toiletries from the market and call the movers from the other day to see if they can help with the setup. I’ll be home later,” I say effortlessly, feeling awful for lying to them as they hug me and leave.

I look at my phone just as Hunter pulls up and hops out of his truck, dressed in a clean pair of wranglers and a tight fitting, black sweater. It’s chillier tonight, fall is slowly creeping in, but not during the days when the heat is near sweltering. I feel like an idiot for dressing in my blue sundress and flats, my skin now chilled in the fall air. Hunter stops and stares at me from his truck, his door still open as his eyes travel up and down my body, lust darkening the blue hue of them.

He reaches over to his passenger seat and pulls out a large, denim jacket before walking over to me and draping it over my shoulders. I’m a bigger girl, but wearing his jacket makes me feel small and feminine. It drapes over me like a cloak, hanging at my sides and stopping at my thighs.

“You look amazing, but cold. Come on, we’re going to be late for our reservation,” he says, pulling me to his truck and buckling me in.

“Reservation? At the diner?” I ask, confused as he chuckles and pulls out of the town square lot and away from both the diner and the bar, the only two places in this town.

“No. There’s a nice restaurant at the Ivy hotel in Cody.” Cody is a town between Cannon Falls and Yellowstone. I stopped for a coffee when I drove in. It’s about thirty minutes away, filled with many more shops and things to do than in Cannon Falls.

He drives in silence, and I watch as his muscular arms bunch and flex as he grips the steering wheel with one hand, the other twirling a toothpick in his mouth. He looks so fucking sexy, like a dangerous cowboy and I am so shocked that I am attracted to this type of man. Only, there is one type of man like him. His type is just Hunter Brooks. Dark and delicious and suddenly the only thing that my body craves.

We arrive at the restaurant and Hunter walks me in like the perfect gentleman. I’m almost shocked that he can be this nice. We sit down and order our food and drinks from the waitress before she disappears, her eyes wandering over Hunter’s body and making this angry green monster rear its head stupidly inside me.

I blush and look away, feeling small compared to the blond beauty that just took our order and practically eye fucked my date. Is this even a date? What is this? What are we?

Hunter looks at me long and hard, sipping his whiskey before leaning back in his chair casually.

“Quit thinking so hard. I can see the smoke from here,” he says and I chuckle.

“Does it happen often?” I ask and he raises an eyebrow at me, confused.

“Does this happen often?” he asks, his hand resting around the glass of whiskey.

“Oh, you know. Come on,” I say playfully, but his confusion deepens with his stare.

“The women. All the women that look at you like…like they want nothing more than to take you to bed,” I say breathlessly, feeling even more embarrassed now that I’ve said it out loud.

He narrows his eyes on me, leaning forward and resting his strong arms on the table as he stops an inch away from my face. His strong, earthy scent mixes with the whiskey he’s drinking.

“I don’t notice it, especially when I’m with the woman that I want naked and screaming beneath me right now,” he says in a dark voice, his eyes smoldering and burning into mine.

He’s so intense, too intense actually. He stuns me into silence, and I drink my water to cool my face down as a blush creeps across my cheeks.

“So innocent. I love how my words affect you. How they make this pale skin red with want. I want to see that redness all over,” he growls, and I thank God that the waitress is back with our food, so I can myself with nibbling at the pasta before me.

I don’t eat much. My appetite is distracted by the lump of dark muscle sitting across from me. I watch him devour his steak with fascination, how his full lips wrap around the tender meat and suck in its juices before biting down on it. His eyes meet mine after a while and we don’t break our gazes as we eat. We just stare at each other until the food’s gone and he pays the bill, walking me back out to his truck before stopping and pushing me back against it.

His hands tangle in my hair and he devours my mouth like he did with his steak at dinner, biting at me and slurping me down as I tremble against him, soaked with need.

“I’m not going to fuck you,” he growls, sounding more like he’s trying to convince himself and not me of this fact.

“You’re going to be sore, and I want you ready and needy when I take you next,” he says against my lips, licking at my throat as I let out a long moan.

“O-Okay,” I stutter, looking up at the night sky as he feasts on my neck.

“Tell me to back off. Tell me to get in the car and drive you back,” he growls, his hands grabbing my ass and pulling me against his erection.

“Hunter…” I whimper and his response is to kiss me with more passion than I’ve ever felt before ripping back and breathing heavily like a beast.

“Say it, Ali,” he growls and after a while, I sigh and push against him.

He’s right, not about me being sore, but needing to stop this. He clouds my judgment too much and I can’t forget that he’s the enemy, no matter how good he feels against me.

“Take me back to my car, Hunter,” I whisper, and he searches my eyes for a while before pulling back with a grunt and yanking the door open, setting me in and buckling my seatbelt.
