There were tears in her eyes and Theo could no longer hold back. He wrapped his arms around her, and Mena instantly snuggled into his chest. He felt her shoulders shaking and he pressed a kiss to the top of her head, before gently nudging her back enough that he could see her face.

“Did you want us to break up?”

Mena shook her head slowly, her wet eyes weary.

“I didn’t either. I’ve missed you every day since you left. I don’t understand how some simple misunderstanding split us up, but I don’t want to let you go again. Ever.”

Mena nodded her head once and then, with a wail, launched herself back at his chest. Her tears were soaking through his shirt so much that his skin was getting wet.

“Isn’t it too late?” Mena asked, her voice muffled.

Theo’s hold on her tightened. “Never.”

Mena’s arms wrapped around him, and for the first time in years, Theo felt complete. Keeping her pressed close with one hand, he lifted the other to her cheek. His thumb brushed away her tears. He didn’t want to think about how much time they’d missed out on, he was going to spend the rest of his life making up for it.

“I do love you,” Mena whispered.

Theo could hear her repeat that every single minute for the rest of time, and it still wouldn’t be enough. There were no wordsfor the happiness he felt, but he knew he would never be parted from his Mena again.

Chapter Ten

Seb

Sebastian sat back in his armchair in the Damflask club, starting to type out a message to Louisa and feeling very content with himself.

“Why are you looking so smug?” Theo asked, taking the chair next to him and glaring at him. Sebastian was long used to that glare, but he thought these days Theo’s glares were decidedly less menacing.

“I always look smug. Resting Smug Face, there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Theo snorted, the very smallest of smiles tugging at his lips.

“I should be congratulating you,” Sebastian trilled. He’d recently received an invitation to Theo and Mena’s engagement party.

Theo’s gaze narrowed and Sebastian had to concentrate on keeping his expression innocent. Apparently it worked as Theo relaxed and grunted out a thank you.

“I suppose I should be thanking you, anyway,” Theo said gruffly.

“Oh?” Sebastian asked, his hands fidgeting with his phone as he looked at Theo.

“Hmm, taking me to that auction…well, there’s no need to go over the details. Just, thanks.”

Sebastian grinned, and debated asking Theo if he’d ever donated the dinosaur bone he’d bought at the auction to the Allardyce museum, but decided he’d rather not risk Theo’s suspicious nature. It was better to appear entirely ignorant. He shrugged artlessly.

“It was hardly a chore, we should do that again sometime.”

Theo stood up, “Perhaps. I can’t stay, I don’t want to be late for lunch at the cafeteria.”

Sebastian raised an eyebrow, amused without understanding what Theo meant.

“Bye,” he said, as Theo turned and walked away.

Theo waved an arm to his side without looking back. Sebastian’s gaze followed him until he left the room. Louisa and he had started all this to win the tontine, but part of him was glad that he was giving his old friend the same happiness that Sebastian himself had found.

When Theo was definitely gone, he opened up his phone and started typing.

Stein has the next report. You’ll love what he’s turned up. Meet at mine tonight to start planning?
