Olivia

James?

I sprang to my feet, a rush of fear mingling with the lingering sensation of pleasure from my recent orgasm. What have I gotten myself into? Ethan’s alarmed expression mirrored my own as we both heard James’s voice at the door. Panic gripped me as I realized James was here, and the impending confrontation made my heart race.

“What’s wrong?” James’s voice carried a hint of confusion. “Why do you look so flustered?”

“Just a moment,” Ethan said hastily, pushing the door partially closed and casting a worried glance my way.

“Why?” James’s tone grew very suspicious, and I knew it was only a matter of time before he found his way in.

I stood there frozen gawking at Ethan as my legs wouldn’t move. In desperation, I quickly threw Ethan’s shirt over my body, hastily buttoning it up hoping to appear less incriminating.

“Come on, Ethan, I’m not in the mood for your silly games,” James said in an exasperated tone, finally pushing his way through the door. “Olivia?”

My heart sank the moment his eyes fell on me. I swallowed hard, shifting uncomfortably as I tried to divert my attention from James’s penetrating stare. That’s when I noticed my torn panties and bra strewn across the floor. In a panic, I quickly kicked them under the couch, hoping to conceal the evidence.

“Listen, James, I . . .” Ethan began, attempting to explain.

“You’re sleeping with my sister?” James interrupted, his eyes boring into Ethan. Suddenly, a look of realization crossed his face. “Wait, is she the younger woman you’ve been talking about?”

He has been talking about me.I turned to Ethan who was now running his hand wildly through his brown hair.

“Yes, she’s . . .” Ethan trailed off, his eyes reflecting with the same worry coursing through me. “Yes.”

“James, just take a moment to calm down and we’ll explain everything,” I pleaded in a soft tone, though my composure was slipping.

What unsettled me further was the impassive look on James’s face. I couldn’t tell if he was mildly angry or seething with fury, making it harder to regain my composure.

“Okay,” James said calmly, proceeding to sit on a nearby couch, separate from the one Ethan and I just had sex on.

Reluctantly, I sat down, discreetly tucking Ethan’s shirt beneath my legs. I shot a quick glance at Ethan, silently seeking his help. To my surprise, Ethan sat beside me and put his arm around my shoulders.

My eyes widened, and I attempted to shrug off his grip, but he held me tightly as he spoke. “Olivia and I are dating.”

James’s blue eyes moved from Ethan’s face to mine, his gaze filled with confusion. “And how did this happen?” He shook his head, seemingly trying to process a thought. “I mean, how did you both meet again?” He pointed at me. “You hated Ethan’sguts, which is why I made sure you wouldn’t have to see him again. So how?”

“It was for work,” I explained, biting my bottom lip as I tried to free myself from Ethan’s touch. This time, he let me go, but only to snake his hand around my waist. I suppressed the sensations his touch sent through my body and threw him a stern look before refocusing back on James. “I was assigned to interview the CEO of Beckett Technologies, not knowing it was the same Ethan Beckett until we met.”

Ethan seamlessly picked up the narrative where I left off, recounting our initial encounter, the events that followed, and how our relationship transformed after the snowstorm. James listened attentively, not interrupting. He seemed to be enjoying our distress as he wore a mischievous smile.

“We didn’t tell you about our relationship right away because we wanted to be certain of where it was headed,” Ethan concluded. His hand retreated from my waist and was now resting on his lap.

“I’m sorry for keeping this from you, James,” I said, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.

I couldn’t anticipate James’s reaction, but I certainly didn’t expect the amused look on his face. He kept glancing back and forth between Ethan and me, grinning like a Cheshire cat.

“So you guys just started . . .” James paused, a mischievous look directed at Ethan, “you mean your ‘woman issues’ were because of Olivia.” He burst into laughter, startling me. James’s chest heaved as he tried to withhold his laughter, but the amusement was evident. I didn’t understand what was so funny. “I mean it’s just Olivia!”

“Just Olivia?” Ethan echoed, taking the words right out of my mouth. The determined look on his face sent shivers down my spine.

“Okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to insult your girlfriend,” James said, raising his hand in mock surrender.

“W-wait, what’s happening?” I had to ask because nothing made sense anymore. “Why are you so calm?”

“You asked me to stay calm before you started explaining,” James said, shrugging as if it were some trivial matter.
