Page 43 of Chase's Human Mate

Trapped in a nightmarish state between life and death. Fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows, and the pain etched on their faces is clear.

My focus zeroes in on Jax. There’s a twisted satisfaction in his gaze, a sick enjoyment in the suffering he’s orchestrated.

No other guards are coming. This moment belongs to him and me.

Without a word, we collide. The confined space becomes a battleground, filled with snarls, gunfire, and the desperate struggle for dominance.

I lock eyes with Jax as we move apart. Madison’s innocent face flashes in front of my eyes. I bare my teeth and let out a loud growl. “Face me like a man, not a beast.” Jax calls out.

It will be my pleasure.

Shifting back into my human form, I have no time to worry about my nakedness though in the back of my mind, Iremind myself how stupid I was for not bringing even a pair of basketball shorts to slide on in an event like this.

“Jax!” I call back, my growl echoing through the strange sterile room.

He rushes toward me and just before he reaches me, I catch the glint of a small knife in his hand. I dodge his thrust just in time to avoid getting stabbed in the gut but the tip of his knife slices into the surface of my flesh and warm blood begins to drip out of the wound.

A primal yell escapes my lips. That’s it, Jax, you’ve just sealed your fate.

We’re not just fighting for our ongoing survival; we’re fighting for the freedom of those around us ensnared in a state between life and death.

My arms wrap around Jax’s throat as he slashes his knife at me wildly. Cutting up my arms, I squeeze tighter listening carefully for his pulse as it first beats rapidly and finally stops beating in silence.

His body is limp in my arms, and I toss him aside. Good riddance.

Breathing heavily, I turn my attention to the computer consoles scattered around the room. One of Malachi’s pack members is clacking away at the keyboard with a purpose.

The screens flicker with data. Decrypting information that holds the key to the dark alliance between the Dark Horizon Syndicate and the Department of Human Security.

His fingers continue to dance across the keyboard with lightning speed as he hacks into the system, determined to dismantle their operations.

“We need to expose them,” he says without taking his eyes off the screen once. “I’m interfering with their data. We’re wiping their slate clean.”

As Lucas works his digital magic, the rest of us remain vigilant, keeping our eyes and ears out for any other guards who might come. No one comes.

Suddenly, the screens flicker, and the room is plunged into momentary darkness. The sound of alarms blaring intensifies. The young hacker smirks and steps back with a triumphant glint in his eyes.

“I’ve sent the information to every news station, every media outlet. The world will know the truth about the DHS and the Syndicate.”

As I step into our shared living space in our new house, after helping to free the shifters who’d been experimented on, and taking them to Malachi’s doctor, I take a deep breath of relief. I am home.

Madison rushes forward leaping into my arms again without a moments hesitation. Her lips meet mine and I groan.

“Oh God, you’re bleeding!” She tries to drop out of my arms, but I pull her in closer to me.

“I was bleeding, only surface wounds. I am okay.”

The tension in her shoulder’s eases. I meet Madison’s eyes, and without a word, I reach out, cupping her face gently. She leans into the touch. The room falls silent as the pack members exchange knowing glances.

“Madison,” I say softly, my voice carrying a depth of emotion. “You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”

Leaning in, I press my lips to hers with a tender and reassuring kiss. As we pull away, I meet Madison’s eyes once more, seeing the flicker of strength returning to her gaze.

“I love you,” she says kissing me again with her arms wrapped tightly around my neck.

“I love you too Madison, forever and always.”
