“There you are, you allusive little sucker,” A woman’s raspy voice carries across the water and fills my ears. My eyes narrow as they focus on the source of the sound.

A fiery red mass of untamed curls draws my attention. There, bent down across the stream, is a young woman wearing a pair of overalls and tightly laced leather boots. In her hands, she holds a bramble woven basket.

Plucking a few plants out of the wet earth near the river, she squeals with delight.

“Don’t you worry,” she says to the plants, “I will propagate you and bring the propagation back here next time I come hunting. I won’t bleed you dry.”

As she lifts her chin and pushes her hands against her knees so that she is standing facing me, I am awestruck. She’s got smudges of dirt on her arms and cheeks. Her hands are caked in earth, but regardless, she is easily the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen.

She stiffens as her almond-shaped dreamy blue eyes meet mine. Then after a moment, I watch her muscles relax.

“Hello there bear, have you caught anything to eat yet today?” The sound of her sexy voice sends shivers down my spine. How I wish I was in my human form at this moment.

I grunt and dip my nose down into the cool water before looking back up at her. She cocks an eyebrow and shifts the basket so that it rests on the top curve of her hip. Even through those baggy overalls, I can tell she’s got a hot body.

“Patience then big bear, the fish will come,” a smile forms on her full, red-painted lips. I nod and lower my head as a sign of submission.

She nods her head, “Yes, the fish will come. I better be off now. I’ve got plenty more plants to find today. Good luck!”

And then she is traipsing up the side of the riverbank toward the cliffs. My eyes don’t leave her for one second, even after she disappears, I find myself looking off in the direction she went, entranced by everything about her.

My senses are on hyper-drive. Part of me feels like ravishing her, the other part wants to chase her down and protect her.Is this what I think it is?

A sudden splash from the water grabs my attention and quick as lightning strikes, I dip my paw in the water throwing several fish into my mouth, then tossing them into my woven basket hidden behind the river weeds.

Another dip of my paw and then clench of my jaw and I have more than enough fish for now. Transforming back into my human form, I quickly put my clothes back on and quickly secure the lid to my basket with a strap. A few paces away I recover my dirt bike that I hid just in case I came across any humans.

The existence of shifters isn’t exactly the secret it used to be but it’s not the wisest idea to expose oneself to them. We tend to fear what we can’t understand. So, our pack policy is, ‘thestealthier the better.’ Something Dustin, our resident fox-shifter, knows all about.

“Chase, can I talk to you?”I ask and Chase nods pulling his arm from around Madison’s waist.

“Let’s go to the office.” He says leading the way.

The office is mostly Chase’s office, it’s a place that’s been triple sound-proofed and allows for private conversations to take place in a house where almost everyone has super hearing. It’s the perfect place for private conversations to take place as needed, and sometimes Chase and Madison have their date nights here.

“What’s going on Isaiah?” Chase asks pouring out two glasses of whiskey for us.

“I think I’ve met my mate,” the words tumble out of me in a nervous rush as I gratefully take one glass of whiskey and down it in one swig. Chase’s eyes widen as he leans forward with the decanter and refills my glass.

“What do you mean? Tell me everything.” He urges.

I relay the afternoon’s events in the forest and tell him how I couldn’t take my mind off the young woman even after I’d left the forest.

“I picked up on her scent in town. I think I have to go meet her, you know, as a human.”

Chase clicks his tongue and then smiles wide clapping me on the back with a strong hand, “I’ll say you do! Where did you notice her scent?”

“That storefront that was leased. There are decals in the window that say, ‘L’s Apothecary.’“

“Do you think she’s a witch?” He asks knitting his eyebrows together.

“I don’t care what she is as long as she’ll be mine.”

Chapter 2

Lorelei

“Iknow Mom but, what’s the point of having these abilities if I don’t make use of them? They come from your side of the family. It wouldn’t kill you to be a bit more supportive.” I say as I balance my phone between my shoulder and ear, washing herbs in my kitchen sink.
