“Who’s the father then?”

Trav glanced at me over his shoulder. “You can’t figure it out?”

I frowned. “You keep doing that, you’re going to break something.”

He smirked. “We’re nearly there.”

I frowned, mulling over what he said. Double B was enormous, stretching hundreds of acres to the south and nearly the same to the north. In fact...

“Longside borders at their north-west corner, doesn’t it?” The realisation slammed into me like Jamie’s friend’s friend bitch slapped me again.

“It does.”

“Tell me she has a brother. Or an uncle.”

“No to the last.”

“Trav...” I stared at his back, taking in the hard line of his shoulders, the way his head bowed. “You fucking told me to keep my ass out of it.”

For a good damn reason.

I couldn’t even think about what he was suggesting. My stomach protested, lurching uneasily.

“No.” His voice ricocheted off the mountain’s hard walls. “I told you I try to stay out of other’s business.”

“That’s the same damn thing.”

“I also told you,” he ignored my interruption, “that some things are worth fighting for.”

I ground my teeth. “Did you use those words?”

“Did I need to?”

I grabbed his shoulder, turning him to face me and shoving the taller man against the hard granite’s sheer surface. “You’re bouncing bullshit between your ears,” I snapped. “If you’re suggestions he’s her half-brother–”

And you knew.

You did nothing.

Trav stared at me, his face as hard as I’d ever seen it.

A long moment passed where my blood roared in my ears. Very slowly he eased my hand from his shoulder and slapped my cheek lightly.

Then he turned on his heel and kept on walking.

I followed him, my heart in my throat. The need to rage at the mountain like I roared at the road built in my chest. The urge faded as quickly as it came on. I studied Trav’s sure steps, the way he trailed his fingers along the granite as he walked as though hosting a private conversation with the silent behemoth.

Silent, like her.

Silent, like the night at Longside.

He brought me out here for a reason.

So I didn’t run off and murder anyone, most likely.

“Thank you,” I muttered, under my breath.

“What was that?” His voice wasn’t as sharp this time.
